Ronny Mauricio Injured Playing Winter Ball
1 year agoNew York Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio (undisclosed) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk on Sunday in the Dominican Winter League and also played his fifth straight game without an error, but he left the game early with a trainer after he came up limping running the bases. The severity of the 22-year-old's injury isn't known at this time, but even if it isn't serious, his stint in winter ball is likely done. The Dominican switch-hitter is set to battle for the starting third base job in New York next spring with Brett Baty. Mauricio made his big-league debut in 2023 and went 25-for-101 (.248) with two homers, nine RBI and seven steals in 26 games. The 6-foot-3, 166-pounder has intriguing power and a strong arm on defense, but he also comes with questionable plate discipline and is likely to have growing pains offensively and defensively in his first full season in the big leagues in 2024.
