Return To St. Louis In The Cards For Matt Carpenter?
2 years agoThe Athletic's Ken Rosenthal speculates that free-agent corner infielder/designated hitter Matt Carpenter's deep and enduring connections to the St. Louis Cardinals seem to make a potential reunion feasible this offseason. Carpenter was a roommate in rookie ball with current manager Oliver Marmol, and he worked out last offseason with both Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado to retool his swing. He also had hitting sessions with former teammate and new bench coach Matt Holliday. The retirement of Albert Pujols could create an opening for Carpenter, who turns 37 later this month. Carpenter hit a strong .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored for the Yankees in 2022 but also missed extended time with a fractured foot.
