Pittsburgh Penguins winger Reilly Smith is out "longer term" after suffering an upper-body injury in the first period of Thursday's overtime loss versus the Vancouver Canucks. The veteran skated just 3:08 in Thursday's game before departing for good. While Smith has a decent eight goals and 20 points across 40 games, he is in the midst of a miserable stretch that has seen him register just two goals over his last 27 games, including Thursday's abbreviated outing. His ice time has been down a little bit to 16:14 on the season but he has largely skated on the team's second line alongside star pivot Evgeni Malkin at even strength while seeing second-unit power play time on occasion. Drew O'Connor is the likeliest of candidates to take over the left-wing role on the Penguins' second line.--Brenton Kemp
