Theo Gillen Surging at Single-A
Source: MiLB.com
Tampa Bay Rays outfield prospect Theo Gillen got off to a slow start this season at Single-A Charleston after dealing with a calf injury that kept him out until April 27, going 9-for-44 (.205) over his first 14 games. But in the seven games since, the 2024 first-round draft pick has recorded six multi-hit efforts, going 12-for-26 (.462) over that stretch. The 19-year-old is now the author of a .300/.451/.543 slash line for the season with four home runs and 12 stolen bases. The Rays' fifth-ranked prospect should see a promotion to High-A later this year, but is still a couple of years away from the majors. With an enticing power/speed profile, though, he's a prospect dynasty managers should continue to keep tabs on.Yoshinobu Yamamoto Tosses Six Strong Innings, Earns Win
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-3) coasted to his sixth victory of the year in a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday. The 26-year-old fired six innings of two-run ball, allowed three hits, and racked up seven strikeouts against two walks. The outing continued an excellent start to 2025 for Yamamoto, who holds a 1.97 ERA with 75 strikeouts, 20 walks, and a microscopic 0.91 WHIP through 64 frames. He's a must-start every time out for fantasy managers, though he'll face a stiff test on Sunday against the New York Yankees. The last time the two met, Yamamoto held the Yankees to one run and one hit over 6 1/3 innings in a Game 2 victory in the 2024 World Series.Source: ESPN
Dodgers right-hander Javier Assad Plays Catch on Monday
Javier Assad (oblique), who has yet to pitch in 2025 due to an oblique strain that originally landed him on the 15-day injured list on March 17, is making progress and played catch on Monday for the first time since suffering a setback in his second minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on April 25. The Cubs eventually transferred Assad to the 60-day IL on April 30 to clear up a 40-man roster spot. The 27-year-old is making progress but still has a ways to go before the Cubs can consider him an option for their big-league pitching staff. He was a full-time starter for the first time in 2024 and held his own with a 3.73 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 124:63 K:BB in 147 innings over 29 starts. However, due to his injury this year, there's a good chance Assad will find himself back in Chicago's bullpen when he makes his 2025 debut.Source: Watch Marquee - Zoe Grossman
Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that right-hander Jonathan Aranda Swats Three-Run Homer in Win on Monday
Jonathan Aranda continued his breakout campaign on Monday in the club's 7-2 win against the Minnesota Twins. Aranda slugged a three-run homer and picked up a single during a 2-for-4 night. His 356-foot HR against Twins right-hander Brock Stewart broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, and the Rays never looked back on their way to a sixth straight win. Aranda's latest contributions upped his season line to an outstanding .302/.381/.491 with seven HRs and 28 RBI over 181 plate appearances. The lefty-swinging 27-year-old has done almost all of his damage against righties, but he'll face a difficult test Tuesday with Twins RHP Joe Ryan (2.68 ERA) on the mound.Source: ESPN
Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Shota Imanaga to Throw a Bullpen on Wednesday
Shota Imanaga (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. Imanaga has not started a game for the Cubs since tweaking his hamstring on May 4, but he threw on Monday before the team's win over the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field and is ramping up his arm. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw is working his way back from a hamstring injury slowly, and he might need multiple bullpen sessions before facing live hitters and eventually progressing to a minor-league rehab assignment. Even if he avoids a setback, the Japanese left probably won't be back in Chicago's starting rotation until around mid-June. Imanaga is the Cubs' ace when healthy and had gone 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 34 strikeouts and 14 walks in 44 2/3 innings in his first eight starts before going on the injured list.Source: Watch Marquee - Zoe Grossman
Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell said on Monday that left-hander Porter Hodge "Not Making Progress"
Porter Hodge (oblique) was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 20 with a strained left oblique after missing the first game of their series against the Miami Marlins. Manager Craig Counsell said before the series against the Cincinnati Reds that Hodge was "in a good spot." However, Counsell said on Monday that Hodge was "not making progress." Despite recording a 5.12 ERA over 19 1/3 innings out of the bullpen this year, the 24-year-old has been one of Counsell's go-to high-leverage relievers with two saves and 19 strikeouts. It's looking like Hodge won't be ready to return from the IL when he's eligible, but a specific timetable for his return is unknown. Daniel Palencia has recorded the team's last three saves and should continue to function as Chicago's primary closer with Hodge sidelined.Source: Watch Marquee - Zoe Grossman
Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Jameson Taillon Stymies Rockies in Victory
Jameson Taillon (4-3) collected his fourth win of the season in a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday. Taillon threw 6 1/3 innings of one-run, four-hit ball with seven strikeouts and no walks en route to his seventh quality start of the campaign. The 33-year-old, who has yielded three or fewer runs in nine of 11 starts this season, owns a solid 3.86 ERA with 51 strikeouts and 12 walks over 63 innings. Taillon has a decent home matchup Sunday against a mediocre Cincinnati Reds offense.Source: ESPN
Chicago Cubs right-hander Alex Verdugo, Eli White Platooning in Left Field
Eli White in left field against left-handed pitchers, while Alex Verdugo will be in left field against right-handers, as he was for all three games against the San Diego Padres over the weekend. White has hit .291 with nine extra-base hits and an .814 OPS in 87 plate appearances against right-handers. Verdugo has hit .309 with eight extra-base hits and a .760 OPS in 100 plate appearances against right-handers. But White hits from the right side and Verdugo hits from the left side, so the Braves will go with a straight platoon in left field, at least for the time being. "Honestly, I'm not going to rule out anything," Snitker said. "But my plan when we got Ronald (back) was, it's gonna obviously push Eli off of right field. And I think I felt like we'd have kind of a good right-left option in left."Source: The Athletic - David O'Brien
Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said he would start Ryan Ritter Slugs Three Homers, Extends Hit Streak to 11 Games
Colorado Rockies infield prospect Ryan Ritter slugged three home runs for Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, now with 12 on the year, which is tied for the second-most in all of Triple-A. The Rockies' 12th-ranked prospect hasread more...
Chris Sale Turning Things Around
Chris Sale had an 0-2 record with a 6.17 ERA, 36 hits allowed (four homers) and nine walks in 28 1/3 innings in his first six starts. But since then, the 36-year-old veteran southpaw has turned things around, posting a 1.64 ERA with 46 strikeouts, nine walks and 32 hits allowed (three homers) in 38 1/3 innings over six starts. He's worked at least 6 2/3 innings in four of his last five starts, including seven innings in each of his last two times out. Sale said he was watching plenty of video and pitching-motion skeletal biomechanics during his rough patch early on to try and figure out what he needed to tweak. He mentioned that his arm angle had dropped a little bit lower than usual, changing the spin on some of his pitches. Sale's next start will come this week on the road against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies, but he'll be a must-start in the tough matchup.Source: The Athletic - David O'Brien
Atlanta Braves left-hander Will Smith Fills Box Score in Win Over Guardians
Will Smith continued his sizzling start to the season in a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday. Smith finished the evening 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks, and an additional run scored. His line is now up to a magnificent .333/.456/.511 with five homers and 28 RBI across 171 plate appearances. While Smith has been adept at drawing walks and limiting strikeouts during his highly productive career, the 30-year-old has been a free pass machine this season. Smith's 18.1% BB rate is easily his best since he debuted in 2019, and he now has more walks (31) than strikeouts (30). Smith occasionally sits in favor of young backup Dalton Rushing, but he's an obvious play for fantasy managers whenever he's in the Dodgers' lineup.Source: ESPN
Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Ozzie Albies' Bat Waking Up

Jose Ramirez Extends Hitting Streak to 19 Games
Jose Ramirez was among the team's few bright spots in a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Ramirez ended the night 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 19 games. He has also gotten on base in 23 straight contests since April 30. Ramirez's numbers this month are a fantasy manager's dream. He's 32-for-86 with 12 extra-base hits (seven doubles, four home runs, and a triple), 12 RBI, 18 runs scored, seven stolen bases, and 8:8 K:BB in May. The switch-hitting superstar will attempt to keep his streaks intact Tuesday against Dodgers right-hander Dustin May, whom he has never faced.Source: ESPN
Cleveland Guardians third baseman Luis Gil Could Throw Off a Mound on Friday
Source: MLB.com - Bryan Hoch
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that right-hander Lui Gil (lat) could throw from a mound on Friday before the team's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, which would be the first time Gil has done so since late February. "Feeling really good," Boone said. Gi has been out all season to this point with a lat strain that he suffered in spring training, and there still isn't a firm timetable on his return. The 26-year-old needs a full spring training-like build-up, though, so he probably won't make his 2025 debut until at least late June. By that time, it will be difficult for the Dominican hurler to match his production from a year ago, when he won the American League Rookie of the Year award with a 16-8 record, 3.55 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 214 K's in 185 innings over 36 starts. Gil's season-long 4.36 xFIP and .237 BABIP already pointed to regression in 2025.Jonathan Cannon to Start on Tuesday
Jonathan Cannon (back) will make his next start on Tuesday against the hosting New York Mets at Citi Field, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Kyle Williams. Cannon was scratched from his last scheduled start on Saturday against the Texas Rangers due to tightness in his lower back, but he's obviously feeling better now and will give it a go in a tough matchup against the Mets on the road this week. Even though the 24-year-old has pitched well with three quality starts in four outings in the month of May, Cannon will be a pretty risky fantasy streamer on Tuesday. Overall, the former third-rounder in 2022 out of Georgia has gone 2-5 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with only 42 strikeouts and 17 walks in 55 innings over 10 outings (eight starts). He'll be going up against a Mets team that ranks ninth in MLB with a .732 OPS.Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Kyle Williams
