Matt Gage to Open for Giants on Friday
Matt Gage will serve as the opener against the Washington Nationals on Friday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Right-hander Kai-Wei Teng had been penciled in to start, but he could end up working in a bulk relief role. While Gage probably won't throw more than a couple of innings at most (his season-high pitch count is 41), he'll look to keep an under-the-radar scoreless streak alive versus Washington. The 32-year-old hasn't allowed a run in 15 innings (13 appearances) divided between Detroit and San Francisco this season. Gage has only struck out 11 hitters, but he has helped offset that by inducing grounders at a 52.5% clip and issuing just five walks.
