San Diego Padres catcher Martin Maldonado was designated for assignment on Thursday as part of a flurry of roster moves made in conjunction with five trades on deadline day by San Diego. One of those trades involved acquiring Freddy Fermin from the Royals, who will take over as the main option behind the dish and bump Maldonado off the roster entirely. The 38-year-old could find himself on a new team within the coming days, but his .204 batting average and .245 on-base percentage are far from inspiring. As bad as it seems, this would be the first season where he's posted a batting average above .200 since 2020, so the veteran is pretty much tapped out offensively.--Jeremy Heist
