Oakland Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien is not among the club’s starting nine for Friday’s contest against San Diego and right-hander Zach Davies. Vimael Machin will hold down the shortstop gig with Semien (side) still unavailable despite taking swings in the cage earlier in the day. He indicated that he was optimistic about returning soon, while Oakland has stated that they don’t believe that he’ll need a stint on the injured list. Without him in the mix, Ramon Laureano scoots up to the leadoff spot Friday, giving him added DFS appeal. Semien’s next chance to return comes Saturday versus Padres righty Chris Paddack.--Jesse Borek
