Despite Richard Childress Racing's significant speed deficit this season, Kyle Busch tried his best to win his way into the playoffs in Sunday's Southern 500. Busch's late decision to take four tires on the seventh caution allowed him to drive up from 10th to second on the final restart, but he stalled out when he reached eventual winner Chase Briscoe, because passing was quite difficult (except on restarts), and he lost by about a car length. To Busch's credit, he raced Briscoe cleanly when some other drivers in his position might have wrecked him. When considering RCR's speed deficit, Busch was probably one of the top-16 drivers this season, but his lack of wins and string of crashes ultimately kept him out of the playoffs. However, Busch's recent uptick in speed may allow him to extend his streak of consecutive winning seasons to 20 to partially salvage his season.--Sean Wrona - RotoBaller
