9 months agoDetroit Tigers shortstop Jordy Mercer, who has been out since April 14 with a right quadriceps strain, is scheduled to finish up his rehab assignment with High-A Lakeland and be activated from the injured list on Tuesday for the opener of the series against the Phillies. Mercer's return should free up a utility role for infielder Gordon Beckham, who had been filling in at shortstop with Ronny Rodriguez. Mercer entered Sunday hitting 0-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts at Lakeland, but he's more of a defense-first player for the Tigers. Detroit cleared a spot for Mercer by optioning outfielder Dustin Peterson to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Mercer can be ignored in all leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
