New York Mets pitching prospect Jonah Tong racked up his fourth double-digit strikeout effort of the season on Saturday, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out 11 in 7 2/3 shutout innings for Double-A Binghamton. The 22-year-old has dominated for the Rumble Ponies this season, pitching to a 1.75 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and striking out an otherworldly 41.0 percent of batters faced. His least effective outings of the season were his first two starts, so the numbers without those two are even more impressive, with a 1.09 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and a 43.4 percent strikeout rate (33.0 percent K-BB%) in his last 11 starts (58 IP). There doesn't appear to be anything left to prove at Double-A, and after this latest showing, look for the 6-foot-1 hurler to get a shot at Triple-A in the near future. If he can show well at the highest level, there's a good chance he'll debut in New York this year, and with his strikeout stuff, Tong could become a stash candidate soon.--Jarod RuppRead More News
