Gunnar Henderson Named AL Rookie Of The Year
1 year agoBaltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson was named the 2023 American League Rookie of the Year on Monday. He is the first winner for the Orioles since closer Gregg Olson in 1989. Henderson took home all 30 first-place votes. The 22-year-old helped guide the team to a 101-61 season as the AL East champions. Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee finished second, while Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas came in third in the voting. Henderson debuted in 2022 but played in 34 games and had only 132 plate appearances, so he was eligible for rookie status in 2023. He finished the regular season hitting .255 (143-for-560) with 28 home runs, 29 doubles, nine triples, 82 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 100 runs scored in 622 total plate appearances.
