Braves Sign Charlie Morton To One-Year Deal
4 years agoThe Atlanta Braves signed right-hander Charlie Morton to a one-year, $15 million deal on Tuesday. The 37-year-old has developed a reputation as a big-game pitcher in the postseason after finishing Game 7 of the 2017 World Series with the Astros and winning Game 7 of the American League Championship Series this year with the Rays. With the addition of Morton, Atlanta has one of the best starting rotations in baseball. Morton and Drew Smyly, a recent signing, join a young core of Max Fried, Ian Anderson and Mike Soroka. Right-handers Kyle Wright and Bryse Wilson are also options. The Braves drafted Morton back in 2002. Morton went 18-8 with a 3.33 ERA in two years with the Rays and was third in the AL Cy Young voting in 2019. However, he wasn't all that sharp during the 2020 regular season and the 2021 season could easily be his last in baseball.
