Anthony Volpe Has Been Red-Hot This Spring
2 years agoNew York Yankees shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe is doing "everything he needs to do" in the competition for the starting job at shortstop this spring, according to general manager Brian Cashman. Volpe crushed a home run and added a double in Sunday's Grapefruit League game as he continues his push to win the starting job on Opening Day. Through nine spring games, he's now hitting .320 with a 1.113 OPS. "I think they certainly respect his ability and the way he goes about things," manager Aaron Boone said. "A lot of our guys, especially our established, core players, I think he's gotten their attention." There are some concerns as to whether he can stay at the 6 in the long term, and some scouts believe it would be ideal for him to start 2023 at Triple-A. Volpe is turning heads, but Oswald Peraza remains the favorite to open as the starter at short because of his defense.
