AJ Blubaugh Called Up On Tuesday, Pitches Effectively in Relief
AJ Blubaugh was called up to join the Astros in Miami on Tuesday, according to Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle. Left-handed pitcher John Rooney was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Blubaugh immediately came in to pitch in relief after Steven Okert and Kaleb Ort combined for two innings to open the game. The lefty pitch effectively in long relief, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out five. The 25-year-old conceded a good amount of hard contact, however, including two home runs. He generated seven whiffs on 36 swings, leaning on his three-pitch mix of a four-seamer, changeup, and sweeper. This was Blubaugh's second appearance of the season with the Astros, with the previous coming back in April when he allowed seven runs (two earned) in four innings against the Tigers. His numbers for the season at Triple-A Sugar Land have been poor, with a 5.76 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 8.7% K-BB% in 89 innings.
