ANALYSIS: With all the injuries to starting pitchers across the league, it's simply mind-boggling that Seattle Mariners rookie starting pitcher Logan Gilbert isn't almost universally rostered. The 6'6" right-hander has been coasting through September. Wherever that rookie wall is, he's not showing any signs of hitting it anytime soon.
Over his four starts in September, Gilbert has posted a 2.01 ERA with two quality starts. The competition hasn't been easy for him lately with two games against the Houston Astros and one against the Boston Red Sox. Gilbert has done a fantastic job at limiting walks this year with a 5% walk rate that ranks in the 94th percentile. He's ceded only three free passes over 22.1 innings so far in September.
Gilbert has certainly had an inconsistent rookie year, but there are multiple indicators that suggest he's been unlucky so far. He has a season-long 4.74 ERA, but his xERA is significantly lower at 3.96 and he has an even lower FIP of 3.54. Opponents have hit .246 and slugged .428 against him, but both of his expected metrics in those departments are below those clips with a .237 xBA and a .413 xSLG.
The 24-year-old rookie should be added in all fantasy leagues to close out the year. He has a mouth-watering matchup against a decrepit Los Angeles Angels lineup on Friday and then he closes the year with a tougher matchup against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. Don't let your opponent in the semis or the finals use him against you.
