ANALYSIS: After a freak injury to star shortstop Tim Anderson, the Chicago White Sox called up infield prospect Lenyn Sosa.
Sosa debuted for the White Sox in 2022 after slashing .296/.352/.469 with a .362 wOBA and one home run in 57 Triple-A games. In his 2022 major league stint, the 23-year-old slashed .114/.139/.229 with a home run and 12 strikeouts in 35 at-bats.
The Venezuelan native did not move many in that limited showing, but he came into spring training in competition for a spot on the major league roster. But after knocking in just two singles in 15 spring training at-bats, Sosa was unsurprisingly sent down to Triple-A.
Lenyn Sosa would have to show out in Triple-A to get another call-up and show out he did. He lit up Triple-A pitching to start the season, slashing .448/.556/.828 with two home runs and eight RBI in nine games.
Since his call-up, he has had three hits (a single, double, and a home run) with three strikeouts in 16 at-bats.

It’s too small a sample size to determine much, but manager Pedro Grifol offered his opinion on Sosa’s play. Speaking to The Athletic’s James Fegan, Grifol said: “I've liked everything so far… He's a good defensive player. On the offensive side, he's got a little bit of thump. There's not much to not like. He's a pretty good baseball player."
Those commendatory words have turned into five straight starts at second base for Sosa. He will presumably be the starting second baseman until Tim Anderson returns, and it will take close to a month before Anderson returns to the White Sox lineup.
Sosa hasn’t batted well enough against major league pitching to warrant a pickup in standard leagues. However, his high offensive ceiling and guaranteed playing time should be reasons enough to add him off waiver wires in deeper leagues.
