ANALYSIS: With Tyrone Taylor out for the first month of the season, the Brewers called up their No. 3 prospect Joey Wiemer to replace him in the outfield.

Joey Wiemer is a freak of nature. He stands at 6’5" and 215 pounds, with a sprint speed of 28.9 ft/sec and a max throw speed of 93.2 mph. And it’s early, but he has an OAA in the 100th percentile and an outfield jump in the 97th percentile in the majors.

Wiemer’s elite athletic tools create a power-speed combo that has already proved lethal in the majors. Through nine games at the MLB level, he is slashing .267/.353/.433 with a home run, three RBIs, and a stolen base.

If there’s anything that could make Wiemer unappealing in fantasy, it’s his hit tool. His hit tool is his Achilles heel, and what a mighty big heel it is (and that’s not just because he’s 6’5"). Wiemer had a 30% K rate and a 20.4% SwStr in Double-A. While a series of plate approach alterations lowered his Triple-A K rate to 19.5%, his 16.5% SwStr rate signals that some good luck was involved with that dip in K rate.

However, Wiemer holds a 23.5% K rate and a career-low 12.5% SwStr rate as a major leaguer. While a sample size of 34 plate appearances isn’t all that convincing, it is a continuation of the dramatic decline in strikeouts he saw in Triple-A.

If Joey Wiemer continues this run on both ends, he could oust Taylor as the Brew Crew’s third outfielder. The 24-year-old is well worth a waiver wire add. And if this relatively low strikeout and SwStr rate is not an unusually long string of good luck, he could be a fantasy star in his first season.
