Quentin Johnston was the second wide receiver selected in the 2023 NFL Draft, one spot behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He will join an inconsistent Los Angeles Chargers passing attack in terms of converting yards into points.
It’s not that the Chargers lack firepower on offense. They have one of the league’s best young quarterbacks, Justin Herbert, throwing balls to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. However, their best receivers dealt with injury concerns last season. Allen was limited to ten games, finishing with 752 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, Williams played in 13 games, ending up with 895 yards. As a result, the Chargers ranked 13th in points per game last season (23) despite having the third-best average in passing yards per game (269.6).
Their injuries might have affected their status for the Wild Card Round playoff game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. Williams did not play, and Allen was limited to 61 yards and zero touchdowns. Worst yet, the Chargers lost the game despite being up 27-7 at halftime. If only the Chargers had another explosive target who could pick up the load in Allen’s or Williams’ absence.

Quentin Johnston - the Most Complete WR from the 2023 NFL Draft
This wide receiver from TCU does have some areas to improve on his game, like disguising his routes better and being a steady catcher, especially for contested balls.
But the Chargers work on those attributes while playing up his strengths. He has long strides that enable him to reach soft spots on defense quickly. Herbert has a vast catch radius to work with him because Johnston towers over most receivers.
While he is a big target, he has deceptive speed that helps him leave defenders behind. Johnston also manifests his athleticism by adjusting mid-air to haul in challenging catches.
Of course, the Chargers want the best for Allen, Williams, and Johnston. Having all three of them healthy gives Herbert giants to work with downfield. They could make a deep playoff run if they have all three lining up.
But it’s noteworthy that the contracts of both Allen and Williams have a potential opt-out after the 2023 season. The best-case scenario is to have them both back and continue terrorizing the rest of the league with Johnson. If they don’t, the Chargers have a security blanket in Johnston, granted that he lives up to expectations and collects more than the 14 touchdowns he had in three seasons for the Horned Frogs.
