Rex Burkhead is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup option for running backs. Target him as a free agent add off waivers for Week 13 of the 2021 NFL season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 8% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: I'm a simple man: I see an RB1 available in my WW, I go and grab some shares. It's really easy and such a straightforward approach that for those in deeper leagues it should take no time to make that decision. Rex Burkhead has been around Houston since the start of the year in what back then was a mess of a backfield. Now, with Mark Ingram II and Phillip Lindsay out of town, the situation is much clearer for the team's tailbacks. And judging by the last couple of weeks, it looks like Rex is the no. 1 rusher going ahead.
Burkhead and David Johnson are the only viable running backs Houston can deploy these days on a weekly basis. That's what they've been doing in the past three weeks, as both RBs have logged nap shares above 30% each. Johnson has shown a "safer" floor with a super cut-down ceiling (never topped 7.5 PPR points in the past four games) while Burkhead has had a 4-PPR minimum in games he was actually used while finishing with 13.8 PPR points once in the past four games. Most importantly, Rex out-snapped Johnson in W12 and clearly took the heavier load in W11 too with 18 touches to Johnson's 16.
Rex Burkhead is most probably not going to turn into a league-winning player, don't get me wrong. But we're talking about a nice deep-league addition here for those hurting at the position. Burky has had three games of 4+ PPR points in the past four weeks and two of them saw him reach 13.8 and 8.4 fantasy points. He's carried the ball 18 and 12 times in the past two weeks, and he's also coming off a 3-for-3 receiving game in which he racked up 27 yards on both the ground and receiving separately. Probably nothing more than a FLEX play for fantasy GMs out there reading this, but still a good one in a backfield that now only has two components to it instead of four.
