MORE OR LESS

Corbin Burnes MORE THAN 8.5 STRIKEOUTS

It is the irresistible force vs. the immovable object. Milwaukee’s emerging ace Burnes has recorded at least nine strikeouts in each of his seven starts this season and the San Diego Padres have a road strikeout rate of 20.8%, the lowest in the National League. Given how he has pitched this season, have to ride with Burnes.

Max Scherzer LESS THAN 8.5 STRIKEOUTS

While the National veteran is delivering more of a vintage Scherzer season, bouncing back from a mediocre 2020 season, he has at least nine strikeouts in five of his nine starts. He is going against a Cincinnati Reds lineup that tends to make contact, with a road strikeout rate of 21.3%, the third lowest rate in MLB.

Aaron Civale MORE THAN 5.5 STRIKEOUTS

Although he is not a big strikeout guy, the Indians right-hander is going deep into games, going more than six innings in four of his past five starts and he has recorded at least six strikeouts in five of nine starts. He goes against a Detroit Tigers lineup that has a home strikeout rate of 27.2%, fourth highest in MLB.

Aaron Judge LESS THAN 1.5 RUNS + RBI

Counting on multiple runs plus RBI is a lot. Even though Judge has destroyed left-handed pitching, he has hit better on the road than at home and the Yankees are at home against the Blue Jays. While Judge has been crushing it in the month of May he has accumulated multiple runs plus RBI in just seven of 21 games this month.

Tyler Mahle LESS THAN 5.5 STRIKEOUTS

The Washington Nationals have a lower-than-average home strikeout rate (22.3%) and Mahle has struggled lately. After posting 31 strikeouts in his first four starts of the season, Mahle has 23 strikeouts in his past five games, finishing with six or more once in those five games.

MORE OR LESS

Jack Flaherty LESS THAN 6.5 STRIKEOUTS

The Cardinals ace is pitching well but has recorded at least seven strikeouts in two of his nine starts and goes against a Chicago White Sox lineup with a lower-than-average home strikeout rate (23.2%).

Andrew Heaney LESS THAN 6.5 STRIKEOUTS

There are often extremes in the performance of the Angels southpaw and at his best he looks like an ace. Heaney has had three starts this season with nine or more strikeouts but he has had five strikeouts or fewer in his other five starts this season. He does face a Texas Rangers lineup with a higher-than-average road strikeout rate (25.6%) but that might not be enough.

Adolis Garcia MORE THAN 1.5 TOTAL BASES

Texas’ rising star in the outfield has been one of the most productive hitters in baseball since getting called up. He is slugging .574 against left-handed pitchers (facing the Angels’ Heaney) and a robust .699 on the road, with both percentages suggesting that he should be able to get a couple of bases against the Angels.

MORE OR LESS

Kevin Gausman LESS THAN 6.5 STRIKEOUTS

This has been a fantastic season so far for the Giants ace but he may not pile up the strikeouts in Arizona, against a Diamondbacks team with a lower-than-average home strikeout rate (21.3%). As well as Gausman has pitched, he has recorded seven or more strikeouts twice in six road starts this season (compared to reaching that threshold in all three of his home starts).

Anthony Rendon LESS THAN 1.5 HITS + WALKS

There may come a time when the Angels third baseman snaps out of his slump but there is not much to like about his performance at the plate this season, which includes a .330 on-base percentage, which is well below his .371 career mark.

Mike Yastrzemski MORE THAN 1.5 TOTAL BASES

Yaz is slugging .552 against right-handed pitching and gets a reasonably favorable matchup against Corbin Martin of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is slugging .413 on the road and is averaging 1.63 total bases per road game, enough of an edge against an unproven pitcher.
