Week 9 Wide Receiver (WR) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

One receiver I’m not as worried about compared to others? Randall Cobb. Has he been awful the past few weeks? Definitely. Looking on the positive side, Cobb had 9 targets and 6 catches last week. Unfortunately those 6 catches only went for 27 yards as Denver had no problem tackling Packers receivers at the point of the catch.

This week vs the Panthers Cobb shouldn’t see too much Josh Norman given that he spends most of his time in the slot. On paper this shuts down James Jones and means Cobb benefits from additional targets. I think he and Rodgers bounce back big this week.

With news that Keenan Allen is out for the remainder of the season, I like Stevie Johnson the most in San Diego. For starters, he already has an experience as a team’s top receiver while leading the Bills with over 1,000 yards in three straight seasons. He’s dealt with some nagging injuries this year, but he kicked off the season with two touchdowns.

I like him more than Malcom Floyd, who is more of a vertical threat, as evidenced by his 19.5 yards per catch on the season and 17.3 over his career. Floyd can still be a solid flex, but in this high volume offense, Johnson is the more complete WR and the one I prefer to have in my lineup.

On the negative side, let’s talk the Colts wide receivers. T.Y. Hilton is very questionable for this game with a foot injury. His owners may be better off if he just misses the game in an awful matchup vs the Broncos. I’ve moved him down outside my top 25.

Meanwhile, I don’t really expect much from Donte Moncrief or Andre Johnson either. The Broncos have dominated WRs all season, and I don’t see that changing here. Maybe one scores, but you are best off avoiding the situation entirely.

One receiver that I am coming around on is Tavon Austin. I’m still not totally sold but he really is improved. He still has the reputation as a flashy big-play-only guy, but he has really become the lead receiver for the Rams. That isn’t exactly saying a whole lot - but over the last five games, he has four+ catches in four of those games, while averaging 56 receiving yards and an additional 17 rushing yards.

He also has five touchdowns during that span. With his modest receiving numbers, plus his extra rush yardage and potential to score a touchdown in three different ways, he is in flex territory.
