Is Anthony Richardson Out for the 2025 Season?
Head coach Shane Steichen said on Monday that Richardson will not be activated from Injured Reserve this week. It makes the freak injury that Richardson suffered even more unfortunate now that he would have a real opportunity to establish himself as a legitimate starter in this league.
Steichen's not sure if Anthony Richardson will be able to return before the season's over. Says right now, "he's not ready."

Richardson still hasn't been cleared for football activities, and while Steichen wouldn't rule out a return for the third-year quarterback this season, it doesn't seem that he is close to playing anytime soon. His vision was temporarily impaired by the injury, and he's still recovering from some blurriness in one eye after surgery, ESPN's Stephen Holder reported on December 3.
Holder added that there was initially serious concern about Richardson's eye after being immediately rushed to the hospital when the injury happened, but he has made great progress since. The 2023 fourth overall pick has been engaging in some training activities in the weight room and has regularly been at the team facility after initially being told to stay at home and rest.
Anthony Richardson 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
With Richardson's timeline still an unknown and with the recent news of eight-time Pro Bowler Philip Rivers coming out of retirement to sign with the Colts on Tuesday, managers should only consider stashing Richardson in deep superflex leagues with IR spots. With rookie quarterback Riley Leonard (knee) dealing with a Grade 1 PCL sprain, Rivers will now compete with Brett Rypien to be the Colts' starter.
Richardson may return before the end of the season, but there isn't a guarantee that he will slot back in as the Colts' starter. His role will largely depend on how Rivers performs and how Richardson looks in practice. And even if he starts, his inconsistency last season makes him a risky fantasy option.

It seems unlikely that Richardson will be able to return before the fantasy season concludes in Week 17. While he remains an intriguing stash in dynasty leagues, he can likely remain on waiver wires for the remainder of the 2025 season, barring something changing.
