Week 7 Quarterback Rankings Outlooks
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) will be evaluated on Wednesday with the hope that he will be able to do more in practice this week, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. Purdy aggravated a turf-toe injury in Week 4 and has now missed back-to-back games (four total this year). He did not practice at all last week, but he was seen working on his conditioning on side fields. The 25-year-old signal-caller is believed to be making progress, but his availability for Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons will all depend on whether he can return to practice this week.
There's no question that Purdy is San Fran's starting QB when healthy, but backup Mac Jones' strong play has given the 49ers the luxury of slow-playing Purdy's rehab from his toe injury. We should have a better idea of Purdy's chances of returning this weekend after the Niners hold a few practices later this week.
Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon cleared things up on Monday for anyone thinking there might be quarterback controversy in the desert after veteran backup Jacoby Brissett's strong performance in the Week 6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. When asked if Kyler Murray (foot) is still the starter under center when he's healthy, Gannon said, "Yeah." "He's the starting quarterback," Gannon confirmed. Brissett threw for 320 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception on Sunday.
The last time that Murray went for over 300 yards passing in a game was in late October of 2022. Although it was just a one-game sample size for Brissett, he looked better than Murray has in his five starts in 2025. The Cardinals organization continues to stand behind Murray as the starting QB, but Brissett's impressive composure in his first start of the year on Sunday could afford the team more patience in bringing Murray back from his foot injury.
J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings
With the Vikings preparing to play the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7, head coach Kevin O'Connell has no plans to name his starting quarterback just yet. J.J. McCarthy (ankle) and Carson Wentz (shoulder) will both practice this week after carrying injuries into the bye week, and O'Connell plans to assess what he sees before making a decision. The team started the year 1-1 under McCarthy before he was sidelined by an ankle injury sustained late in a Week 2 loss to the Falcons.
They've since gone 2-1 with Wentz, with both Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson benefiting from the improved passing volume over that time. McCarthy was the 10th overall pick of the 2024 Draft, so the expectation is that he will again be named the starter as soon as he is healthy, but with Wentz proving capable as his backup, the leash might be shorter than once thought coming into the year.
Justin Fields, New York Jets
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said during a Monday press conference that he never considered benching quarterback Justin Fields despite Fields' struggles in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. Cimini reports that Glenn "reiterated commitment to Justin Fields, but acknowledged that he took a step back" on Sunday. The 26-year-old completed nine of 17 pass attempts for 45 yards and was sacked nine times for a combined loss of 55 yards in Week 6 against Denver.
Fields has thrown for 799 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 235 yards and three touchdowns in five games so far this season. If Fields were to get benched, veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor would likely take over under center for the Jets. However, it appears the team is not considering making a switch going into Week 7. Fields' dual-threat ability keeps him in the mix as a fantasy starter in single-QB leagues, and he gets a much more favorable matchup in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers.
Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield led his team to its fifth win of the season in Week 6, beating the San Francisco 49ers 30-19. Mayfield completed 17 of his 23 pass attempts for 256 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception and added 14 rushing yards on three carries. The 30-year-old has now thrown for 1,309 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first six games of 2025.
Tampa Bay entered Week 6 without wide receivers Mike Evans (hamstring), Chris Godwin (leg), and Jalen McMillan (neck), and then lost star rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka (hamstring) to a hamstring injury during the game. It's currently unclear how long the Buccaneers will be without their top four wide receivers. Regardless, Mayfield has proven himself to be a worthy fantasy QB1 on a week-to-week basis.
Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa criticized some of his teammates and the team's leadership following a 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6. The defeat dropped Miami to 1-5 on the season. When asked about Miami's slow start, Tagovailoa said that "it starts with the leadership" before proceeding to express his frustration that several players have been showing up late to (or completely missing) players-only meetings.
Time is running out for the Dolphins to turn things around, and the quarterback's comments indicate some possible areas of focus for the team to address going forward. All the while, speculation about head coach Mike McDaniel's job security continues to run rampant. Miami's one victory of the season came against the winless Jets in Week 4. The Dolphins will look to get right against a struggling Cleveland Browns team in Week 7.
