Nacho Alvarez Jr. Dealing With Side Soreness, Won't Start on Thursday
Nacho Alvarez Jr. (side) had some soreness in his side after sliding on Wednesday night, according to manager Brian Snitker. Alvarez will not start in Thursday's contest against the division-rival Miami Marlins at Truist Park, but it's possible that he'll be available off the bench. Austin Riley (abdomen) is on the injured list, so Jonathan Ornelas will get the start at third base on Thursday and will hit eighth against Marlins right-hander Eury Perez. The 22-year-old Alvarez will be considered day-to-day for now with the chance of potentially returning in a starting role as early as Game 2 of the series on Friday. The former fifth-rounder in 2022 out of Riverside City College is only a short-term infield option in deep NL-only leagues with Riley on the IL. Alvarez has gone 9-for-39 (.231) on the year with three doubles and is still searching for his first long ball in 11 games.
