Horse For The Course: PGA DFS Course History - 2025 3M Open

Tony Finau - PGA DFS Lineup Picks, Golf Betting

Todd McGill's DraftKings, FanDuel PGA DFS picks for the 2025 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. Picks for daily fantasy golf based on course history

Another major championship, and another Scottie Scheffler victory. Royal Portrush made for an excellent venue as it did in 2019, but the weather made scoring easier than expected, and after taking a four-stroke lead going into Sunday, it was going to take a herculean effort to stop him from reaching the third leg of his career grand slam. We now set our sights on the FedEx Cup playoffs, but first, the 3M Open is on this week's docket.

This year's field has drummed up a fairly impressive list of names, considering the long trek from Northern Ireland to Minnesota. After 26 years as an event on the PGA Champions Tour, the tournament graduated to the main circuit in 2019 but has been held at TPC Twin Cities for its entire duration. There is enough course history to make for an informative read, especially as guys try to secure their place in the playoffs.

Horse For The Course is an article highlighting players in this week's field with elite course history and is part of our free PGA DFS content here at RotoBaller. 2025 3M Open

This year's field is void of any player inside the top 15 in the world, with Maverick McNealy (ranked 18th) leading the way, followed by Sam Burns and Wyndham Clark. However, the likely people to watch will be those sitting on the top 100 bubble to keep their PGA Tour Cards for next season. It's a different feel from previous years and will be a big talking point over the next two events.

For most years, the winners of this event haven't gone on to light up the golfing world. Jhonattan Vegas looks to defend his title from last season, where he ranked inside the top 10 in three of the four individual strokes gained metrics. It's been an event that has lent itself to distance off the tee, and playing at over 7,400 yards this season, will likely again be a strong point of emphasis.

Even with the length, scoring frequently nears -20 under par. Although it certainly feels like players who were not eligible to play the week prior in the Open have a slight advantage, as others get re-adjusted to golf in the States.

TPC Twin Cities

Par 70 - 7,431| Greens: Bentgrass | Designed By: Arnold Palmer

Built in 2000, TPC Twin Cities was lengthened in 2018 to make it a more suitable test for PGA Tour talent. However, the overall playability of the course still makes it one of the easiest tests on the schedule despite the many hazards across the 18 holes.

Last year, approach play was focused heavily on 175- 225 yards, while accuracy off the tee played a larger role than distance, even though bombers have found a great deal of success. Green complexes are not as tricky as what has been played on for much of the summer, so if guys can find the greens, it is a fast track to making their way up the leaderboard.

Most statistical considerations should remain within the realm of ball striking, with driving distance being at the forefront. Even with the heavier reliance on accuracy, the wider fairways of TPC Twin Cities still aid those who can move it as far off the tee as possible. Strokes gained on approach will again be at the forefront.

Recent Scottish Open Winners

  • 2024: Jhonnatan Vegas (-17)
  • 2023: Lee Hodges (-24)
  • 2022: Tony Finau (-17)
  • 2021: Cameron Champ (-15)
  • 2020: Michael Thompson (-19)

The Horse

Tony Finau

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('22), T3 ('20)

Winning this event in 2022, Tony Finau has supplanted himself as the leading player at TPC Twin Cities, finishing no worse than T28 in five career starts. It's a needed return to a property with good vibes for the 35-year-old, who has struggled to find any real form since May.

His approach play has been the main contributor for Finau in this event, averaging +1.232 over his last 20 rounds. However, his +2.489 total strokes gained average is ranked fourth among all players in the field. Finau sits 59th in the FedEx Cup race, so a good week at a favored venue is desperately needed.

The Ponies

Cameron Champ

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('21)

Since his win in 2021, Cameron Champ has turned in solid finishes of T16 and T12. A strong putter has led the way, as he ranks third in the field in strokes gained putting (+1.452) on this layout. His length off the tee is also a huge help, and given his teatering between the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours this season, Champ needs a solid week to potentially get back to the main circuit on a more regular basis.

Jhonattan Vegas

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('24), T2 ('21)

At this point, the trend for picking players with prior victories here should be fairly evident. Guys who get the job done at TPC Twin Cities have continued to return and find success, and although there was a two-year absense from Johnny Vegas after his runner-up finish in 2021 to his victory last season, it's obviously a place that suits his fancy.

The putter is a slight concern coming into the week, but he's felt pretty comfortable on the putting surfaces here in the past. Ball striking is still a bright spot for the almost 41-year-old from both a distance and accuracy perspective, so as long as he gets the job done on and around the green, look for Vegas to have a decent week.

Emiliano Grillo

  • Notable Finishes: T2 ('22), T3 ('20)

When you see the names of winners and the type of game needed to compete here, Emiliano Grillo perhaps isn't the first name that comes to mind. However, the 32-year-old has produced a solid stat sheet over the last 18 rounds at TPC Twin Cities that has him gaining more than +0.400 strokes in every category, with strokes gained off the tee (+0.615) leading the way.

Grillo's accuracy on approach shots across the board gives him an excellent advantage, especially when combining that with his already impressive putting acumen on greens that don't offer much defense for the course. Sitting 71st in the FedEx Cup race, a big week could be all he needs to comfortably look ahead to 2026.
