Where Will Lebron James Play in 2024-2025? Five Potential Destinations

Eleazar Gonzales lists down the top-five best destinations for Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James in 2024 free agency. What teams would offer an ideal situation?

The last time LeBron James' camp announced the all-time leading scorer would be entering free agency, the league went supernova. It shouldn't be a surprise considering every team LeBron played for won the NBA championship.

James, turning 40 this December, finished the 2023-2024 season with averages of 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 8.3 assists (fifth in the NBA), and 54% field-goal shooting. It's these numbers that are making James a hot catch for any team because he can transform any team into a championship contender despite being beyond his supposedly prime years. If anything, LeBron is still in his prime years as we've never seen any player of his age put up those numbers while playing 71 regular-season games and logging 35.3 minutes per game.

In this article, we're listing down the top-five potential destinations for LeBron James for the 2024-2025 regular season and why each destination makes sense.

Los Angeles Lakers

We've seen this before. James, then playing for the Lakers, entered free agency or declined his player option to join free agency earlier -- only to sign a new deal with the Purple and Gold.

Now, staying with the Lakers is one of the best scenarios for the four-time NBA champion for various reasons. For one, this is the Lakers we're talking about -- one of the most storied NBA franchises. Imagine James retiring as a Laker. He may not receive the same amount of love compared to the love Kobe Bryant received in his final run in Hollywood, but it will be up there.

For another, LeBron indicated on many occasions he only has one or two seasons left in the tank. If he moves, it means he'll move his family again. It means new adjustments. It could also mean a higher risk of getting injured again because he'll play a different role compared to the one he's been playing with the Lakers.

Not to mention the Lakers are open to selecting Bronny James in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft -- should the opportunity present itself.

LeBron's return to Hollywood will now depend on who the Lakers will hire as their new head coach.

Philadelphia 76ers

When the news first broke out about LeBron entering 2024 free agency, one of the first teams to enter the picture was the Philadelphia 76ers.

In fact, the Sixers are reportedly prepared to go all-in in trying to acquire LeBron again. It's no longer a secret the Sixers have been spending a decade trying to get LeBron to come to Philly. And of all the teams, the Sixers are the only team with the cap space to match that of the Lakers and offer the King a max contract.

Why is Philly a good destination for LeBron to end his career?

A team-up with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris would increase the King's chances of capping everything off with a championship.

Atlanta Hawks

Before the NBA Draft Lottery, there was a 3% chance the Atlanta Hawks would win the lottery. And yet, they did.

With the top pick in the upcoming rookie draft, the Hawks could get the best available talent. This scenario will work well if and when the Hawks decide to draft Bronny James as the top pick.

And, LeBron repeatedly made it public that he wants to play alongside his son before unlacing his laces for good.

Also, the prospect of seeing Trae Young and Dejounte Murray throwing lobs to LeBron could lure more fans back into the fold.

Golden State Warriors

Now, this is a hypothetical choice, and yet, it almost happened before this year's trade deadline.

It has been reported that hours before the trade deadline in February, the Golden State Warriors tried to trade for LeBron James -- with Draymond Green, a client of Rich Paul, even sending a text message to Paul to try and recruit the King to come to San Francisco.

Obviously, the trade didn't happen, but that doesn't mean a potential team-up between LeBron James and Stephen Curry can't happen.

Why are the Warriors a viable destination for LeBron?

It's simple: Curry and LeBron are both gunning for their fifth NBA championships, respectively. Imagine if they can win one more championship to end their respective careers. It doesn't get more poetic than that.

Cleveland Cavaliers

A return to Cleveland for the final time would be a sentimental scenario for many reasons.

If LeBron returns to the franchise that drafted him in 2004 and the team he led to a championship in 2016, it would be a major storyline for the next two years.

Assuming the King looks that way, it would be a no-brainer. After all, he is the franchise's all-time leader in almost everything.

The Cavs were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the 2024 Eastern Conference semifinals in a series where the Cavs were hobbled by injuries to Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert.

Now, put LeBron James back in a Cavs uniform and Cleveland could be back in the finals again.
