Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Cincinnati Reds Designating Outfielder Hunter Renfroe For Assignment

The Cincinnati Reds have designated veteran outfielder Hunter Renfroe for assignment. The National League Central club announced the move in a tweet from the club’s official Twitter account on Monday morning. Renfroe was designated for assignment to make room for fellow outfielder Stuart Fairchild, who was activated from the COVID-19 injured list.

The Reds tweeted the following:

Fairchild is batting .223 with a .332 on-base percentage, five home runs, and 10 stolen bases in 242 plate appearances so far this season. Fairchild has seen playing time at all three outfield positions and logged a 0.5 fWAR in the process.

Renfroe, meanwhile, is sporting a .233 batting average and a .297 on-base percentage, to go along with 20 home runs in 548 plate appearances during the 2023 campaign. He's mainly played right field with a handful of appearances at both designated hitter and first base. Overall, the former Reds player owns a 0.6 fWAR.

The veteran outfielder started the season with the Los Angeles Angels but later joined Cincinnati after being claimed off waivers earlier in August. That being said, Renfroe has struggled mightily since joining the Reds, batting .128 with a .227 on-base percentage and just one home run in 44 plate appearances for the National League Central franchise. He only had hits in three of the 14 games he appeared in for the Reds, though four of those 14 total appearances did come as a pinch hitter.

In the event that Renfroe signs with another team before the end of the season, fantasy managers are probably better off looking elsewhere for streaming options in the outfield.
