NFL Draft Recap: Green Bay Packers: 2023 NFL Draft Outlook

Christian Watson - Fantasy Football Rankings, Waiver Wire Pickups, Draft Sleepers

How did the Green Bay Packers do in the 2023 NFL Draft? Which rookies will have a major fantasy impact in 2023?

The Green Bay Packers are in a transition period after trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. They also lost Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard, who joined Rodgers in New York.

They used the 2023 NFL Draft to address their positions of need. The Packers made 13 selections, five on defense and one on special teams.

But even after those picks, Green Bay’s direction is still hazy, especially with Jordan Love remaining an unproven commodity.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Green Bay Packers 2023 NFL Draft class

  • Round 1, 13th overall – Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa
  • Round 2, 42nd overall – Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State
  • Round 2, 50th overall – Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan State
  • Round 3, 78th overall – Tucker Kraft, TE, South Dakota State
  • Round 4, 116th overall – Colby Wooden, DT, Auburn
  • Round 5, 149th overall – Sean Clifford, QB, Penn State
  • Round 5, 159th overall – Dontayvion Wicks, WR, Virginia
  • Round 6, 179th overall – Karl Brooks, DT, Bowling Green
  • Round 6, 207th overall – Anders Carlson, K, Auburn
  • Round 7, 232nd overall – Carrington Valentine, CB, Kentucky
  • Round 7, 235th overall – Lew Nichols III, RB, Central Michigan
  • Round 7, 242nd overall – Anthony Johnson Jr., S, Iowa State
  • Round 7, 256th overall – Grant DuBose, WR, Charlotte

Yes For Lukas Van Ness

Van Ness showed at Iowa that he has the versatility and strength to play either defensive end or defensive tackle. However, given his speed, the Packers will likely put him on the edge. He finished the three-cone drill in seven seconds, giving him the potential to become an explosive pass rusher. There’s also a chance he’d line up as a linebacker in the Packers’ 3-4 defense.

Packers Searching For More Receivers

Even with Lazard and Cobb leaving, the Packers still had Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. But that’s not enough to compete, and their front office is aware of their deficiency in the position. They selected Reed, who had 1,026 yards and ten touchdowns in 2021.

Meanwhile, Wicks was a 2021 First Team All-ACC member after tallying 57 receptions for 1,203 yards and nine touchdowns. DuBose had 64 receptions, 792 yards, and nine touchdowns in his final year with the Charlotte 49ers. Musgrave is also a talented pass-catching tight end

Green Bay Packers 2023 NFL Draft grade

The Packers get a B for their 2023 class. Aside from Van Ness, the rest of their draft class are relative unknowns. Likewise, they could have taken Wooden later in the draft. It remains to be seen if they will become productive NFL players.
