Did The Commanders Release Carson Wentz?

After acquiring quarterback Carson Wentz and his large contract from the Indianapolis Colts in a deal that also involved the exchange of draft picks prior to the 2022 season, the much-maligned quarterback failed to meet expectations for the Washington Commanders.

The 30-year-old signal-caller missed multiple games with a finger injury and was also benched in favor of Taylor Heinicke for a stretch of the '22 season. Ultimately, Wentz appeared in just eight games for the Commanders and passed for a career-low 1,755 yards with 11 TDs and nine INTs.

Today, the Commanders released Wentz in a cost-cutting measure that will save Washington $26.17 million against the 2023 salary cap.

Playing on his third team in as many years last season, things didn't get any better for Carson Wentz in Washington. After a messy end to his time in Philly...and his time in Indy...his first - and only - campaign with the Commanders was one marked by injury and inconsistency.

The Wentz experiment was a weird one for Washington and is now officially over, as the organization will save just over $26 million by cutting ties with the floundering signal-caller ahead of the 2023 season. The question is now what becomes of a 30-year-old, injury-prone QB, whose horrible decision-making leads to turnovers in mass quantities, and whose character issues have now been called into question by multiple organizations?

The answer equates to a grim outlook for Wentz, who was once thought to be a franchise-type QB during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles at the outset of his career. If he wants to continue playing football, the former second-overall draft pick will likely be forced to accept a backup role – as well as a significant pay cut – in 2023.
