The San Francisco 49ers plan to hire former Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks as their new defensive coordinator, according to sources. Wilks will be replacing DeMeco Ryans, who left to become the next head coach of the Houston Texans. The Niners interviewed Wilks on Monday and obviously liked what they heard. San Francisco's last two head coaches, Robert Saleh and Ryans, went on to become head coaches. In two years under Ryans, the 49ers defense ranked second in the NFL in points (18.9) and yards per game allowed (305.3), fourth in defensive efficiency (60.7) and yards per play (5.04) and fifth in defensive EPA (67.02), so Wilks has plenty to work with in his new job. Wilks has experience as a head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach in his time in the NFL.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
