Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 2:
Kyle Monangai, Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai came back from a hyperextended right knee and immediately made the backfield look more like a real two-man setup. He rushed 10 times for 100 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 59-37 win over Carolina, adding two catches for 24 yards. D'Andre Swift still led the way with 18 carries for 124 yards and three scores, but Monangai played 32 snaps to Swift's 43. That is more important than the 61-yard touchdown by itself.
Chicago didn't just sprinkle him in late; he handled 42.7% of the offensive snaps and stayed involved as a receiver. Monangai and Swift became the first teammates since 1980 to each top 100 rushing yards in a season opener. After missing roughly three weeks because of the knee injury, Monangai's Week 1 usage erased some of the concern around his role. He still sits behind Swift, but his standalone fantasy value looks much stronger than it did entering the opener.
David Montgomery, Houston Texans
Houston Texans running back David Montgomery had a debut to remember with his new team. The 29-year-old totaled 20 carries, 60 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns. He also contributed in the passing game with three catches, 19 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. The Texans came up short against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1, but Montgomery certainly isn't to blame.
He consistently found ways to get into the end zone when the Texans were in scoring range, allowing the score to stay close throughout the entire second half. Perhaps even more notable is the fact that Woody Marks had just nine carries, which means Montgomery finished with more than two-thirds of the Texans' running back carries in this game. The yardage efficiency numbers weren't great, but none of that matters if he can continue to be a surefire threat to score around the goal line. After proving himself with his new team, Montgomery has jumped to the mid-to-high RB2 tier for Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Blake Corum, Los Angeles Rams
Los Angeles Rams running back Blake Corum rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries during Thursday's Week 1 loss against the San Francisco 49ers. He led the team in rushing yards, and his 5.4 yards per carry were nearly 50% greater than Kyren Williams' per-carry average. Williams was less productive on the ground despite having one more carry. However, there were two clear differences between the running backs on Thursday. First, Williams found his way into the end zone, building on last season's total of 13 touchdowns.
Additionally, he had three catches for 24 yards, while Corum wasn't targeted in the passing game. For a while, there was some chatter that Corum and Williams could have a relatively equal split in the backfield, and that came to fruition in Week 1. Williams still ranks higher in fantasy football because he should tally more receptions and touchdowns, but Corum's heavy involvement in the rushing attack will keep him in the RB3 tier for Week 2 against the New York Giants.
Travis Etienne, New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints running back Travis Etienne Jr. rushed for 46 yards on nine carries during Sunday's Week 1 overtime loss against the Detroit Lions. He also caught seven of his nine targets for an additional 32 receiving yards. The receiving volume helped Etienne salvage his fantasy performance in half-PPR and full-PPR leagues, but otherwise, it was a frustrating game for fantasy managers. Notably, Etienne split touches with Kendre Miller, as both had nine carries.
Very few people would have predicted that the Saints would go with an even split between Etienne, who was just paid $48 million, and Miller. Furthermore, Miller vultured a goal-line touchdown from Etienne. We'll want to get a few more games in the sample before we can confidently say that Etienne will consistently share touches going forward, but it appears to be headed in that direction. For now, he'll drop to the low-end RB2 tier in half-PPR and full-PPR leagues for Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Wan'Dale Robinson, New York Giants
Tennessee Titans wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson gave fantasy managers a familiar stat line in Sunday's 23-10 loss to the New York Jets, catching five of six targets for 38 yards. It wasn't a big day, but the six targets tied rookie Carnell Tate for the team lead while Cam Ward managed only 140 passing yards. Robinson's value has never depended on piling up deep shots. He caught 92 passes for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns with the Giants last season, then signed with Tennessee and reunited with offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
The Titans also list him as a starter, so there is no role question to solve here. What needs to improve is the offense around him. Tennessee produced only 195 total yards in the opener, and Robinson averaged 7.6 yards per catch. That can make him frustrating outside of full-PPR formats. Still, five catches in a poor offensive showing are enough to keep the floor interesting. If Robinson was left on the waiver wire, he should be a priority add in PPR leagues ahead of Week 2 against Philadelphia, with more value as a steady depth option than a high-ceiling play.
