Tommy La Stella, David Fletcher Could Platoon At Second Base
5 years agoLos Angeles Angels manager Joe Maddon said the most likely situation to fit both infielders Tommy La Stella and David Fletcher into the lineup together is with La Stella at second base and Fletcher in right field. “Obviously you want to get Tommy out there as often as you can against righties,” Maddon said. “The challenge is that I like Fletcher on the field as much possible. The fact that David is versatile to play different positions is going to matter.” Fletcher has played 27 games in the outfield in the majors. Brian Goodwin figures to be the loser in this scenario, but he has a career .842 OPS against lefties and a .767 OPS against righties as a left-handed hitter. La Stella doesn't seem to be much of an option at first base, as he's played just 5 1/3 innings there in his career. La Stella had a breakout in 2019 with an .832 OPS and 16 homers in half a season, but he didn't play much in the second half due to a broken leg. La Stella is a bit more attractive in fantasy in deep mixed and AL-only leagues for his power, but his playing time is a concern. Fletcher could play more because of his positional versatility, but he doesn't offer much in the way of power and also might not play every day.
