Steven Matz Experiences More Back Soreness
6 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals left-hander Steven Matz (back) experienced soreness the day after his third minor-league rehab appearance on Sunday. Matz is currently on the injured list with a lower-back strain and is headed to Los Angeles to get a second opinion in the next couple of days. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw's back injury originally cropped up on April 30 during a start against the Detroit Tigers. In addition to a nagging back injury, Matz hasn't been good enough to warrant attention in most mixed fantasy leagues in 2024, going 1-2 for the Cards with a 6.18 ERA (4.74 FIP) and 1.73 WHIP with a 17:11 K:BB in 27 2/3 innings over his six starts. We should know more about his back injury soon, but at this point, it's highly unlikely we'll see Matz again in St. Louis' starting rotation before the All-Star break in mid-July. He's currently sporting a career-low 13.4% strikeout rate.
