Tampa Bay Rays shortstop prospect
Carson Williams went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a stolen base in a 5-4 loss against Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Williams hit his 23rd homer and swiped his 22nd base of the year. The 22-year-old has been streaky at the plate this season, opening with a .564 OPS in April and .632 in May before breaking out with a .999 mark in June. He's followed a similar theme in the second half of the year, with a mediocre .714 OPS in July, and has now heated back up with a .948 mark in August. The hit tool continues to be the biggest drawback for the top shortstop prospect, as a 34.2% strikeout rate at Triple-A is tough to overcome. Williams is a candidate to be promoted when rosters expand, and his power and speed combo would make him a decent speculative add.

New York Yankees outfield prospect
Spencer Jones went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday. Jones got the scoring started in the game with a 443-foot blast off starter Alek Manoag in the top of the first inning. It was the lefty slugger's second home run of August after he belted 11 in July. Overall, it hasn't been a kind stretch for Jones, as he is slashing .159/.250/.261 with a 7:26 BB:K ratio in 69 at-bats. Predictably, Jones has fared much worse against same-handed pitchers this year, with a .719 OPS against lefties compared to a 1.058 OPS against righties. Jones has still been incredible at Triple-A this season despite the glaring hit tool concerns, and it wouldn't be too surprising if he were given a shot in the majors before the season ends.

Dennis Santana slammed the door on the Toronto Blue Jays in a 2-1 win on Wednesday to record his ninth save of the year. Santana threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning on eight pitches, all strikes, and fanned one hitter. The right-hander has gone 3-for-4 on save chances since the Pirates dealt closer
David Bednar to the New York Yankees at the July 31 trade deadline. While Santana yielded seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings over his first three August appearances, he has now tossed 5 1/3 scoreless frames in a row. The 29-year-old's ERA is down to 2.36 with a .88 WHIP and 43:11 K:BB in 54 1/3 innings.

Washington Nationals reliever
Jose A. Ferrer made quick work of the New York Mets in a 5-4 win on Wednesday to collect his third save of the year. The left-hander tossed a scoreless, one-hit ninth inning and finished off the Mets on just seven pitches. Ferrer has gone 3-for-3 in save opportunities since the Nationals traded closer
Kyle Finnegan to the Detroit Tigers on July 31 and recorded six straight scoreless appearances. Over 61 2/3 innings, Ferrer has registered a 4.38 ERA (2.92 FIP) with a 1.23 WHIP, 51 strikeouts, and 12 walks.

Los Angeles Angels shortstop
Zach Neto (wrist) left Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds with left-wrist soreness, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Neto was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third inning and stayed in until the Angels replaced him with
Oswald Peraza in the top of the sixth. He finished the game 0-for-2, ending a modest six-game hitting streak. The 24-year-old has put up terrific production for the second straight season, having slashed .267/.325/.479 with 21 homers, 55 RBI, 74 runs scored, and 22 stolen bases in 471 plate appearances. Neto is just two homers away from tying a career high and eight steals from his second straight 30-SB campaign.

San Francisco Giants right-hander
Landen Roupp (knee) was carted off the field on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres with an apparent injury to his left knee. Roupp took a line drive off the right leg from
Ramon Laureano in the bottom of the third inning, and he twisted his left knee awkwardly while trying to get out of the way. The Giants replaced Roupp with left-hander
Joey Lucchesi. Wednesday's start was Roupp's second since he spent the last week of July and the first half of August on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. Although the 26-year-old yielded five earned runs on five hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings against the Padres, he has been an effective part of San Francisco's rotation this season. Roupp has made 22 starts and gone 7-6 with a 3.80 ERA and 102:45 K:BB in 106 2/3 innings.

Detroit Tigers right-hander
Jose Urquidy (elbow) continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery in June 2024. The Tigers will use Urquidy as a reliever when and if he is activated for the 60-day IL. The 30-year-old has made four rehab starts but has not pitched more than two innings in any of those appearances. Currently, there is no room in the Tigers' rotation for him, and Urquidy does not have enough time to be stretched out as a starter. Urquidy is an option for the Tigers' rotation in 2026 and has pitched out of the bullpen from 2019 to 2023 for the Houston Astros during the regular seasons and playoffs.

Kirby Yates (back) each threw an inning during their rehab stints at Triple-A on Tuesday and could already be on the verge of returning to the majors. Asked if Scott or Yates would make another rehab appearance, manager Dave Roberts said, "probably not." That could set the pair up to return from the 15-day injured list during this weekend's series against the San Diego Padres, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. The Dodgers have gone without Scott, their closer, since July 22 because of elbow inflammation. Yates, one of the Dodgers' top setup men, has been on the IL with lower-back pain since July 29.

Enrique Hernandez (elbow) is beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register reports. Manager Dave Roberts said it's "feasible" that Hernandez could rejoin the Dodgers at some point next week. The team has gone more than a month without the 33-year-old utility player, who went on the 10-day injured list with left-elbow inflammation on July 7. Before then, Hernandez posted an unappealing .195/.259/.367 line with eight homers, 22 RBI, and 23 runs scored in 186 plate appearances.

New York Mets outfielder
Brandon Nimmo (neck) is day-to-day after leaving the team's 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday with neck stiffness, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The Mets pulled Nimmo and put
Starling Marte in left field in the bottom of the third inning. Nimmo has battled occasional discomfort in his neck since running into the outfield wall in a game in 2019, but he and the Mets have done a good job managing it over the years. Nimmo entered 2025 having appeared in 150-plus games in each of the previous three seasons and has been durable again this year. Over 122 games and 511 plate appearances, the 32-year-old has slashed .254/.325/.436 with 20 homers, 68 RBI, 62 runs, and 12 stolen bases. The Mets expect Nimmo to be fine within 24 to 48 hours, which means he could be out of the lineup for their series finale against the Nationals on Thursday afternoon.

Ha-Seong Kim (back) was scratched on Wednesday against the New York Yankees because of tightness in his lower back, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays started
Tristan Gray at short in Kim's place. Kim is considered day-to-day, so it doesn't seem like a serious issue, though it's worth noting he spent time on the 10-day injured list earlier this summer with a low-back strain. After recovering from offseason surgery on his right shoulder, Kim debuted on June 4 and has struggled over 24 games and 93 plate appearances. The former San Diego Padre has hit .214/.290/.321 line with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, and six stolen bases.

San Diego Padres outfielder
Jackson Merrill (ankle) was out of the lineup for the third straight game on Wednesday as a result of a left-ankle strain. Merrill suffered the injury last Friday and has been out of commission since he left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers early. While the Padres have avoided placing him on the 10-day injured list, manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that "there is some bone bruising, which can take a while to heal." With that in mind, Merrill's status for the Padres' series against the Dodgers this weekend "appears questionable," according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic. If that's the case, the team may have to put him on the IL. Should Merrill go on the shelf on Thursday, the Padres would be able to backdate it to Aug. 18. The club should have an update on his status before Thursday's series finale against the San Francisco Giants.

Los Angeles Angels closer
Kenley Jansen (ribs) is dealing with an injury to his ribs and won't be available against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. Jansen revealed that he injured himself in the gym on Sunday. The 37-year-old right-hander is unsure if he'll be able to return when the Angels open up a series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. After surrendering two earned runs in one inning on Tuesday to take the loss against the Reds, Jansen owns a 3.00 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP, 48:16 K:BB, and 23 saves over 48 frames.
Ryan Zeferjahn and
Reid Detmers are the only other Angels relievers with more than one save this season (they have two apiece), so either could close in Jansen's absence.
