Austin Gomber Placed on Outright Waivers
Austin Gomber on outright waivers, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. After missing the first two-plus months of the season with shoulder soreness, the 31-year-old debuted June 15 and has registered disastrous results over 12 starts. Gomber has gone 0-7 with a 7.49 ERA, a 1.72 WHIP, and 34:17 K:BB in 57 2/3 innings. With Gomber on a $6.35 million salary and owed around $1.33 million for the rest of the season, it seems unlikely that another team will claim him. If no one does, the Rockies will have the option of keeping him on their roster. Even if Colorado retains Gomber through the season, he's facing an uncertain future as a soon-to-be free agent. Also a former St. Louis Cardinal, Gomber joined the Rockies in a February 2021 blockbuster trade that centered on then-superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado. The soft-tossing Gomber has made 125 appearances (109 starts) with the Rockies and gone 28-44 with a 5.31 ERA, 6.66 K/9, and 2.59 BB/9 across 601 2/3 innings.
