The Chicago Bears are expecting defensive backs Jaylon Johnson (leg) and Kyler Gordon (hamstring) to be ready for their regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. Johnson is "on the right track" to be cleared for Week 1, according to head coach Ben Johnson. Gordon is still viewed as week-to-week, according to Chris Emma of 670 The Score, but is hoping to appear in a preseason game. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor their status in case they face a setback leading up to the regular season. Johnson is a Pro Bowl defensive back who enjoyed another strong campaign in 2024, totaling 53 tackles with two interceptions. Gordon inked a three-year extension with Chicago in the offseason and is slated to also serve as a starter in the secondary. With both Johnson and Gordon expected to be ready for the regular season, the Chicago defense will have streaming appeal in favorable matchups.

The Los Angeles Chargers defense put on a dominant performance in a 27-13 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints. Under second-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, the defense held the Saints to just three points and 127 total yards in the first half. This strong showing comes a week after the unit forced five turnovers against the Lions. Fourth-year linebacker Caleb Murphy recorded two sacks against Saints starter

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a four-year contract extension on Wednesday with president of football operations/general manager John Schneider, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. Minnesota Vikings Safety Josh Metellus and the Vikings reached an agreement Saturday on a three-year, $36 million contract extension with a max value of $42 million that includes $25 million guaranteed, per agent Drew Rosenhaus. The NFL Players Association is not expected to engage in formal negotiations with the league and its owners on a potential 18-game regular season until at least early next year, according to people familiar with the deliberations. It makes it unclear on when an 18-game season could be implemented, according to The Washington Post's Mark Maske. The union could be in position to launch formal negotiations with the NFL and its owners after its annual meeting of player representatives in March. Some owners had hoped to have an 18-game season as early as 2027 or 2028, but it might be unrealistic to expect that to happen in 2027. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and other league leaders have not pressed the union to begin negotiations. When formal negotiations do begin, they could be contentious, as many of the players already think a 17-game season is too long.

The NFL informed teams that for the second straight year, they will not hold a supplemental draft this summer, sources told The Athletic. The supplemental draft is an option for draft-eligible players who did not declare for the regular NFL draft in the spring for various reasons. In all, 46 players have been selected in the supplemental draft's history, with notable selections being quarterback Bernie Kosar (1985), wide receiver Cris Carter (1987) and receiver
Josh Gordon (2012).

The Minnesota Vikings signed general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to an undisclosed multi-year contract extension on Thursday night, sources tell NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The Vikings are 34-17 with two playoff appearances since Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell arrived, and now both are signed with the organization for years to come. Both O'Connell and Adofo-Mensah signed four-year contracts when they first arrived in 2022. Sam Darnold and outside linebackers Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed punter Thomas Morstead, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Morstead, a 16-year NFL veteran and former Pro Bowler, had been released by the New York Jets back in March. He averaged 48.2 yards per punt with the Jets, and he's only had one punt blocked through 255 career games. This signing could indicate that the 49ers aren't committed to Mitch Wishnowsky, who missed eight games due to injury last year and is coming off the worst season of his career.

The Washington Commanders have re-signed free-agent defensive tackle Carl Davis, according to an announcement from the team. A third-round pick back in 2015, Davis' career has included stints with the Ravens, Browns, Colts, Jaguars, Patriots, Cowboys, and Commanders. He appeared in three games with Washington last year, amassing just three tackles. He's a physical specimen in the trenches, checking in at 6-foot-5 and 335 pounds. This move gives the Commanders veteran depth up front.

The Detroit Lions have signed free-agent linebacker Zach Cunningham, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Cunningham's career previously included stints with the Texans, Titans, Eagles, and Broncos. He was once a standout defender in Houston and even led the NFL in tackles in 2020. However, he was more of a depth player in his age-30 season last year, making just four tackles over seven games (zero starts) with Denver. He'll provide similar value to a Detroit defense that had been seeking veteran linebacker depth.

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Derrick Brown (knee) continues to be evaluated on a week-to-week basis as he recovers from the season-ending meniscus injury that he suffered last year, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic. Both Brown and head coach Dave Canales have emphasized that although they'd like to see the talented defender back on the field, they do not want to rush his recovery and rehab progress. He suffered the injury during Week 1 last year, putting an end to his season as soon as it had begun. In 2023, he made 103 tackles and registered two sacks while earning recognition as a Pro Bowler.
