Michael Carter The Favorite To Handle Backup Role
1 year agoNew York Jets third-year running back Michael Carter has put together a good offseason and is the favorite, for now, to handle the backup job to Breece Hall (knee) if the Jets don't sign free agent Dalvin Cook or another veteran before training camp. Carter showed promise in his rookie season in 2021 but had a reduced role last year, carrying the ball 114 times for 402 yards (3.5 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. He also caught 41 of 54 targets for 288 yards in 16 games (10 starts). The 24-year-old could have a decent early season role early on as the team eases Hall back into the fold, but eventually, Carter doesn't figure to be anything more than a rotational pass-catching back for the Jets. He'll also have to hold off impressive rookie Israel Abanikanda.
