justin verlander fantasy baseball rankings pitchers draft sleepers MLB injury news

Today's Underdog MLB DFS prop picks for Tuesday, September 12, 2023 by Josh Costello. Use his MLB over/under props recommendations to win money on Underdog.

Javier Assad, 3.0 Earned Runs Allowed (LOWER)

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Javier Assad has a Tuesday matchup against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. In the past month, the Rockies have the third-highest strikeout rate, sixth-lowest OPS, and seventh-lowest wOBA against right-handed pitching. The venue is a bit concerning, but Assad has not given up more than three earned runs in any of his 26 appearances this season, including eight starts. The Cubs pitcher has shown a knack for run prevention and should continue in this matchup.

Patrick Sandoval, 17.5 Pitching Outs (LOWER)

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval faces the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. In the past month, the Mariners have the second-highest wRC+, fifth-highest batting average, and fifth-highest wOBA against left-handed pitching. Sandoval has been slumping lately, giving up four or more earned runs in three of his last five starts. Sandoval has also recorded less than 16 pitching outs in four of his previous five starts. The Mariners are a good team and could force Sandoval to exit early.

Austin Hedges, 0.5 Total Bases (LOWER)

Texas Rangers catcher Austin Hedges has a Tuesday appointment with Toronto Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu. In his career against Ryu, Hedges has gone 1-for-11 (.091) with two strikeouts. Ryu is a pitcher who gets the better of many hitters in his career, including Hedges, and he will likely continue to do so on Tuesday.

Underdog Fantasy Pick'em (LOWER)

Justin Verlander, 6.5 Strikeouts (HIGHER)

Houston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander faces the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday. In the past month, the Athletics have a 24.4% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Verlander's season-long strikeout numbers do not look great; his 7.86 K/9 is his lowest since 2015, but there is some reason for optimism. The 40-year-old pitcher has reached at least six strikeouts in three of his last four starts. Verlander could rack up the strikeouts in Tuesday's matchup.

Trea Turner, 0.5 Singles (HIGHER)

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has established himself as one of the best hitters in baseball. Turner faces Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried on Tuesday. In his career against Fried, Turner has gone 10-for-27 (.370) with a home run and two RBI. Turner has seen Fried well in the past and likely will continue to do so on Tuesday.

Freddie Freeman, 1.5 Total Bases (HIGHER)

On Tuesday, Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman faces San Diego Padres starter Michael Wacha. In his career against Wacha, Freeman has gone 5-for-12 (.417) with four singles, a double, five walks, and an RBI. Freeman already has the Dodgers franchise record for doubles in a season and will likely try to become the first player to reach 60 doubles since the 1930s. Tuesday's contest should be an excellent opportunity for Freeman to continue his historic season.
