Is Tyjae Spears Out for the Season? Fantasy Football Outlook and Injury Update (2025)

Tyjae Spears - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, Waiver Wire Pickups

Is Tyjae Spears out for the season? Read the latest Tyjae Spears fantasy football outlook and injury update for 2025. Mitch breaks down whether Spears should be drafted.

Injuries have dogged Tennessee Titans’ running back Tyjae Spears for his entire career. He had already torn his ACL twice—in both high school and college—before entering the NFL.

After a promising rookie season, Spears missed five games and saw his production decline while dealing with ankle sprains and hamstring pulls. As we enter Week 1, Spears is already on the IR.

Spears’ injury seems pretty bad. After spraining his ankle in the first preseason game, he has missed the rest of the preseason and now is set to miss at least four more games. Will he be back in time to help your fantasy team, or will Tyjae Spears miss the whole 2025 NFL season? Read below to find out.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Is Tyjae Spears Out for the 2025 Season?

Spears showed burst and explosiveness as a rookie. In 2023, he ran for 453 yards on 100 carries, scoring two rushing touchdowns. He was also extremely effective as a receiver, catching 52 passes for 385 yards and another touchdown.

In 2024, Derrick Henry left the Titans, but the addition of Tony Pollard limited Spears’ involvement in the offense. That, combined with Spears' injuries, declining efficiency, and a poor quality Tennessee offense, prevented him from improving his fantasy output.

Despite those challenges, Spears had a strong finish to the season. He caught six passes for 87 yards and scored two total touchdowns in Week 15 and ran for two more touchdowns in Week 16. While he didn’t see the end zone in Week 17, he did rush for 95 yards on 20 carries in his first start of the season.

With the Titans boasting an improved offensive line and a new quarterback in No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, there was optimism for Spears’ 2025 season. Pollard is 28 years old, and Spears is only 24. The time is coming for Spears to take over as the lead back.

Spears could have more opportunities to score touchdowns. Last season, the Titans scored the five-fewest touchdowns in the league, and Spears only found the end zone five times. The Titans are probably a better offense than they were last season.

However, all of these cases for optimism will never come to fruition if Spears doesn’t see the field.

Tyjae Spears 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook

The high ankle sprain Tyjae Spears suffered in his preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was listed as Grade 3 on DraftSharks, a designation that can take three months or longer to fully recover.

At the time of his injury, Titans coach Brian Callahan said he hoped to have Spears back by the start of the season, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The fact that Spears’ injury has lingered longer than the initial expectations is somewhat concerning. The earliest Spears can possibly return is Week 5, in which the Titans face the Arizona Cardinals, a weak defense. However, with Spears still in a walking boot, that is not certain. Even when he does return, it might take some time for his involvement to ramp up.

The uncertainty regarding Spears should make you reluctant to draft him in late drafts. He could still end up making an impact late in the season, and you can keep him on your IR while he’s out, but you should push him down the draft board. If you drafted him prior to his injury, he’s still worth hanging onto in 12-team leagues with two or more starting RBs and two or more flex spots.
