Week 7 Running Back Rankings Outlooks
Rico Dowdle, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle has been the talk of the NFL lately, recording 373 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on 60 total touches across his last two games played. Dowdle has been filling in for Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard (calf), who could make his return in Week 7 against the New York Jets.
However, Panthers head coach Dave Canales has been non-committal about whether Hubbard will remain the starter once he returns. While Hubbard will certainly get his touches, it's hard to imagine that Carolina would completely remove Dowdle from the game plan, given what he has done over the last two weeks.
If there are any leagues where Dowdle remains available, he needs to be rostered in all fantasy formats and could be a borderline must-start running back in Week 7, even if Hubbard returns to the lineup.
Chuba Hubbard, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard (calf) has missed the last two games, and in his stead, Rico Dowdle has run for 389 yards and added 84 receiving yards and two touchdowns. When asked if Dowdle has earned the right to continue his role as the starting running back, head coach Dave Canales was non-committal.
There's an adage around the NFL that players don't lose jobs to injury, but when their replacement is responsible for over half the team's total yardage over a surprising two-game winning streak, Canales' "We'll see" makes a lot of sense. With Dowdle averaging 7.3 yards per carry over the past two games, while seeing 60 total opportunities, he remains a must-start until proven otherwise.
Bucky Irving, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said on Monday that running back Bucky Irving (foot, shoulder) is not in play to return for the team's Week 7 game next Monday night against the Detroit Lions, according to Greg Auman of FOX Sports. Irving missed a second straight game in the Week 6 win over the San Francisco 49ers due to a foot sprain and a subluxation of his shoulder, and it appears fantasy managers are going to have to wait a little longer for his return.
He may be available to return for a divisional matchup in Week 8 against the New Orleans Saints. With Irving sidelined, Rachaad White hasn't exactly been the most efficient with his increased touches out of the backfield, but he has had a nose for the end zone and has scored three times in two games. Expect at least another game in the lead-back role for White against Detroit. Fantasy managers need to keep him in their lineups as a volume-based RB2.
Jaydon Blue, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue saw a decrease in workload on Sunday during his team's 30-27 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The rookie was expected to see an increase in playing time in Week 6, but Dallas' ground game was relatively ineffective against Carolina's defense, prompting the team to air it out more. With backfield mate Miles Sanders (knee, ankle) set to miss the remainder of the season, Blue's role should grow as he becomes more comfortable on an NFL field.
However, he doesn't figure to have much standalone value with Javonte Williams dominating touches and looking effective. For now, fantasy managers can consider the former Texas Longhorn a solid handcuff, but not a startable option with Williams in front of him.
Kimani Vidal, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers running back Kimani Vidal exploded in Week 6 against the Miami Dolphins with 18 carries for 124 yards (6.89 YPC) and three catches for 14 yards with a receiving touchdown. With rookie sensation Omarion Hampton (ankle) set to miss at minimum the next three games, Vidal was the clear RB1 in this offense, with Hassan Haskins hardly used on Sunday, with only six carries for 14 yards and one reception for nine yards. Vidal played 70% of the snaps, while Haskins played only 28% of them.
Vidal proved he is the running back fantasy managers should prioritize in this offense, and moving forward, Vidal should provide low-end RB2 value until Hampton returns. Up next for the Chargers is a tougher matchup at home against the Indianapolis Colts, who rank in the top 10 against opposing running backs.
Bam Knight, Arizona Cardinals
Late Sunday morning, it was announced that Arizona Cardinals' running back Bam Knight was bumped up to the top of the Cardinals' depth chart at running back, and he responded with 34 yards on 11 carries and scored a one-yard touchdown in the Cardinals' 31-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Knight also contributed through the air, hauling in one of his two targets for a 20-yard reception. Meanwhile, Michael Carter had a very similar line, rushing for 34 yards on 11 carries and had two receptions for 30 yards. Emari Demercado was barely involved, seeing only one carry on the afternoon.
All of this to say, it appears that the Cardinals have no interest in giving Carter the full reins of this backfield, and moving forward, both Knight and Carter will provide RB3 value, and fantasy managers should expect them both to see 10-15 touches per game. The Cardinals have a tough matchup coming up against the Green Bay Packers before their Week 8 bye. Fantasy managers beware, Trey Benson (knee) is eligible to return in Week 10 and will likely become the lead back once he returns.
Hassan Haskins, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers running back Hassan Haskins started Sunday's game but quickly faded as second-year back Kimani Vidal took over in the team's 29-27 win over the Miami Dolphins. Haskins managed only six carries for 14 yards and one catch for nine yards, while Vidal exploded for 138 total yards and a touchdown.
Even against the league's worst run defense, Haskins struggled to produce, averaging just 2.3 yards per carry. With Omarion Hampton (ankle) still on IR for at least the next three games, Vidal appears to be the clear RB1 moving forward. Haskins can be dropped in shallow fantasy leagues or stashed in deeper formats unless injuries occur again.
