Favorite Targets Early On Monday

Akshay Bhatia ($7,100)

Here is a little teaser into the outlook of my model this week. These are the top five climbers mathematically when diving into their improvement in 'projected success" at Torrey Pines versus their recent results over the past 24 rounds. The easier way to explain that would be, "These are the golfers who are most likely to overcome bad form to find success at a course that fits their games better than we have seen in the recent window of returns."

The funny thing about that answer is that Harris English has already shown part of the expectation to be accurate, winning at Torrey Pines two weeks ago amid four finishes outside of the top 40 surrounding that result. It doesn't mean those names above will find the same success English just uncovered, but being ahead of the market is more important than playing things safe.

We can dive into a few of those names a little deeper in a second, but Bhatia landed next to Wyndham Clark, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Viktor Hovland, Robert Macintyre and Collin Morikawa as the only seven names to grade top 35 this week for Expected Driving, Putting and Iron Play.

Patrick Cantlay ($9,400)

We all know about Patrick Cantlay's recent mishaps of trying to get himself across the finish line. No victories since the 2022 BMW Championship will quickly ramp up a notion of struggles quicker than anything else when we are now in the 2025 calendar year. However, the one thing that I do highly want to stress during this article is how the public perception of a golfer is a hell of a drug that can cause poor reads to a situation if you start landing under the belief of "past results."

The space can sometimes be too reactionary in that way and make concrete decisions from it. You don't have to look further than last week when everyone said Detry couldn't close the show or around this time last year when Xander was labeled as a choker. I understand that until an idea is dispelled as inaccurate, you will always live in that world of belief with many gamers and bettors. Still, I will stress this comment once again...it is essential to avoid reading too much into "past results" since public perception can create leverage on the good end of the answer and overpricing when the market overreacts to quality past results of any kind.

Cantlay graded as one of only four golfers this week to crack the top 30 of my model for all seven categories that I weighed at Torrey Pines (Scheffler, McIlroy and Sungjae were the other three). That might have carried more weight if it weren't for his 33rd-place finish at Pebble Beach a few weeks back, but let's not forget the American was the top-projected scorer through two days before unraveling in the poor conditions on Saturday and Sunday.

While I don't believe this course is quite as ideal as Pebble Beach usually proves to be for his game, the 16-18/1 price two weeks ago in California are now doubled in the outright market and does present playability across the board for all game types this week.

When Cantlay wins again is unknown, but if we had odds on the location, California and Poa would always be the leaders in the clubhouse.

Viktor Hovland ($7,900)

We talked about this concept a little inside of Discord today. Extremely thick rough tends to help a poor around-the-green golfer since it 1. accentuates ball-striking and hitting greens and 2. leaves a little less creativity when you are trying to chop out onto the putting surface.

I still have some concerns about Hovland's lack of reps while in contention recently, but that upside isn't completely needed when you get a $7,000 price tag that will allow us to still shoot for the potential but do so at a much cheaper price tag than we are accustomed to paying.

Of the golfers who were in the bottom 15 in projected around-the-green production overall, only Akshay Bhatia and Viktor Hovland were able to reverse that trend by climbing into a top-25 producer when adding an extra mix of thick rough, three-putt avoidance, Fast Poa putting and overall scrambling.
