Week 6 Quarterbacks - Rankings & Matchups Analysis

Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers are fresh off of their shellacking against the Jets last week, and are now heading to Miami to face the Dolphins in Week 6. While the matchup is prime (Miami has allowed the 10th most points to the QB position) and the offense is humming with the return of Le’Veon Bell, this game could be tougher than advertised for the Steelers. These past two games (both wins) have both been home affairs for Pittsburgh, and this game comes on the road where they are markedly worse. In their last road game Week 3 they were beaten down by the Eagles 34-to-3, and were unable to get anything going offensively. If you own Big Ben you are starting him, just keep your expectations in check. This season he owns a 12:2 TD:INT ratio at home, and a 3:2 ratio on the road.

Russell Wilson began the year hobbled, which has been part of the reason why the offense has struggled like it has. Now fresh off the Bye Week, Wilson should be a bit healthier and ready to roll against a shaky Falcons secondary. Atlanta has allowed the most fantasy points to opposing QBs this season, so if Wilson can use his arm and legs to their full capacity, watch out. On the flip side, this one will be tough for Matt Ryan, who is fresh off of his worst performance of the season against the Broncos. Their defense has been good, but Seattle has been even better; they have allowed the fewest points to QBs this season. Ryan was able to have an OK day last week, but this is one week I would sit Ryan before rolling him out the rest of the season. Wilson should be ranked higher on our list, Ryan is about right.

Carson Palmer should return from injury this week. He was ruled out last week against the 49ers after sustaining a concussion in Week 4. Now healthy, Palmer draws a great matchup with the surprisingly soft New York Jets on Monday night. They have been torched in back-to-back weeks against Wilson and Roethlisberger, and now have to travel to Arizona where Palmer has feasted this season. Given that he has fully recovered from all of his symptoms, look for the Cardinals passing attack to get back on track this week.

Even though he has not been properly utilizing his top receiving threat, Brian Hoyer has been very good this season with the Bears. How good? Only Ryan and Roethlisberger have scored more fantasy points than Hoyer since Week 3. Once Cutler returns he is expected to take the job right back, but Hoyer has done so well that he might stay in there. He gets another chance to prove himself this week against the Jaguars, who have allowed the seventh most points to opposing QBs this season. Though Hoyer made a terrible mistake at the end of the Colts game last week not looking the way of Alshon Jeffery along the sideline, he still makes enough plays during the game while limiting his mistakes to be an effective start this week. He will be a top-12 play this week.

Alex Smith has done some things differently so far this season. Through his team’s first four games he is running the ball less than normal, and is passing more than he has in his whole career (averaging 42 attempts per game). With Jamaal Charles now back in the fold things may go back to the norm, but the norm is good for Smith. He plays the Raiders this week, a team he has absolutely dominated in the past. In eight games against them, Smith has a 60.5% completion percentage, along with an 18:3 TD:INT ratio. With how badly Oakland has played against opposing QBs this season, Smith is a sneaky good play this week. For the record, his schedule over the next nine weeks is extremely manageable.
