Carson Smith Could Be Invaluable Part of Bridge to Craig Kimbrel for Boston

Carson Smith looked like he could be the closer in Seattle in 2015 after Fernando Rodney faltered. Instead, he was part of the Wade Miley deal in the off-season and he's now behind another uber-closer: Craig Kimbrel. All is not lost, though. Bullpens are constructed to lock down the later innings before turning the ball over to the closer. Smith will not get many save opportunities, but if Kimbrel were to get hurt, he might get more chances than the older Koji Uehara. Fear not - he can still be quite valuable in fantasy leagues that use non-closers. In '15, he had 92 strikeouts in 70 innings, which translates to more than one per inning. Smith also had a 2.31 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. Don't be deceived by his 2-5 record, since that's not a true indicator of his worth to a pitching staff. One of our writers definitely thought that he was worth taking a flyer on, ranking him No. 250 out of the Top 300. Take him at the end of your draft if he fits your needs.
