PGA DFS: DraftKings Fantasy Golf Sleeper Picks and Advice for the John Deere Classic

Danny Lee was able to claim his first ever win on the PGA Tour after surviving a four-man playoff last week at the Greenbrier Classic.  Golfers will now head to Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic; the last tournament before the British Open commences next Thursday. Golfers will be competing on TPC Deere Run, a par 71 with $846,000 and 500 FedEx Cup points to the champion.

Per the course website, “TPC Deere Run features tree-lined fairways, several dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views of the Rock River. It will be a stern 7,080-yard test for professional golfers from the championship tees.” The par four, 18th hole, is one of the hardest holes on tour each year. Players must maneuver the ball around a right dogleg and reaching the green is an entirely separate issue. To the right of the green are two bunkers and to the left of it is water.

Editor’s Note: Our Partner DraftKings is hosting a HUGE Fantasy Golf tournament this weekend . The PGA John Deere Classic will pay a whopping $275K in prizes with $100K to first place, and best of all it's FREE to enter! If you Sign up and make a deposit now, you’ll get a 100% bonus on your first DraftKings deposit. We’ll also give you free access to RotoBaller’s Premium MLB DFS Lineup Picks and Tools (a $99.99 monthly value).

Due to this competition being played a week before the Open Championship, many notable players will be taking a week off. Others will be playing in the Scottish Open to practice on a links course in preparation for St. Andrews. Jordan Spieth won the John Deere classic two years back, his first tour win, and will be looking to regain his crown from defending champion, Brian Harman. Zach Johnson and three time defending champion Steve Stricker will also be participating.

PGA DFS High-Priced DraftKings Picks ($8,700-$13,700)

Jordan Spieth ($13,700 Vegas 7-2)

The only way I see Spieth failing to win or finishing in the top three here would be him looking ahead to the Open Championship. If he has his game on point, he should destroy this field and the course. His price is steep, but that’s what you will have to pay when picking the hottest player on tour in this shallow of a field.

Steve Stricker ($9,300 Vegas 35-1)

Stricker won this tournament in 2009, 2010, 2011 and last year finished tied for 11th.  As of late, he has not been playing his best golf and was cut at the Greenbrier last week. However, he is returning to a course he loves to play. He will have confidence and should be able to regain his stroke.

David Hearn ($8,800 Vegas 50-1)

Last week Hearn and Lee had to play a second playoff hole and Hearn narrowly lost. Hearn still played extremely well scoring 107 fantasy points. Hearn lost in this tournament two years ago on a fifth playoff hole to Jordan Spieth. He has never won on tour and will be extremely hungry in this tournament to finally get that win.

PGA DFS Mid-Priced DraftKings Picks ($6,800-$8,600)

Jason Bohn ($8,400 Vegas 50-1)

Bohn shot a third round 68 last week, but blew up on Sunday shooting a 71 and finishing tied for 13th with 81 fantasy points. He ranks third in driving accuracy percentage and third in three putting avoidance. I think last week was a learning experience for him and if he is near the top on Sunday he will know how to succeed in the final round.

K.J. Choi ($7,700 Vegas 150-1)

Choi is a nurtured veteran on the tour and can play competitively on any course without being fazed. He did not play this tournament last year, but two years ago finished tied for 33rd. He has not finished better than tying for 15th at the Texas Open, but if you are looking for a veteran player at a decent price, he is your man.

Stewart Cink ($6,800 Vegas 210-1)

Last year at the John Deere, Cink shot a seven under tying for 52nd. He ranks fourth in greens in regulation, but 145th in putting. If he can turn his putting around he should post at least 70 fantasy points, a good amount for his price.

PGA DFS Low-Priced DraftKings Picks ($5,000- $6,700)

J.J. Henry ($6,500 Vegas 190-1)

Henry scored 82.5 fantasy points last week going 10 under and tying for 13th. Last year at the John Deere he tied for 63rd shooting five under for the tournament, but two years ago Henry was finished tied for 7th, two shots behind the winner. He ranks 12th in greens in regulation percentage, but will need to turn his putting around which ranks 151st.

Will Wilcox ($6,400 Vegas 120-1)

What a great name he has. He has finished in the top 25, five times including making seven of 11 cuts. He ranks number one in sand save percentage so if he were to hit it in the bunker, you’d be sure he’d find a way to save par. He also ranks 13th in greens in regulation percentage.

Andres Gonzales ($5,700 Vegas 350-1)

He has made 14 of 21 cuts this year and had two top ten finishes. Last week he scored 65.5 fantasy points, which is a tremendous amount for his price. At these price ranges it is hard to find a player more suitable to make the cut than Gonzales.
