The Athletics announced on Tuesday that they acquired left-hander Sean Newcomb from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move to clear space on the 40-man roster, the A's designated left-hander Matt Krook and right-hander Ryan Cusick for assignment. Also, outfielder/first baseman Seth Smith cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas. Newcomb will head to the American League West after the Red Sox designated him for assignment over the weekend. The 31-year-old southpaw will return to the A's after making 14 appearances for them in 2023 and 2024. He had a 3.95 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 41:17 K:BB in 41 innings over 12 outings (five starts) with Boston this year before being cut. With the A's, he'll likely serve in a long-relief role and as starting-rotation insurance.--Keith Hernandez
