Horse For The Course: PGA DFS Course History - 2024 RSM Classic

Todd McGill's DraftKings, FanDuel PGA DFS picks for the 2024 RSM Classic at Sea Island Resort. Picks for daily fantasy golf based on course history

The last full-field event of the season is finally here, it's RSM Classic week at Sea Island Resort. A tournament that has been the season closer for much of its time since the inaugural event in 2010. Because of the destination, it garners the attention of a few larger names, as Ludvig Aberg is making his first start since the Tour Championship.

For Aberg, it is a title defense of his breakthrough victory in 2023. For others, it is the last gasp to lockdown starts in 2025. This is a multi-course event for the first two days, as players will get a crack at both the Plantation and Seaside layouts before focusing solely on the more difficult Seaside course for those who make the 36-hole cut. So, let's find out who the best horses in the stable are and have ourselves a helluva week!

Horse For The Course is an article highlighting players in this week's field with elite course history and is part of our free PGA DFS content here at RotoBaller. For some of the favorite DFS plays of the week check, out the Core Four article written by my buddy, Joe Nicely here at RotoBaller every Wednesday. 2024 RSM Classic

Ludvig Aberg had a massive week here last season, as he dominated the field from tee to green en route to winning by four shots; setting a tournament scoring record and tying the PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record. It was the first victory in his young career and he joins the list of other players to get their first win at this event, including Kevin Kisner, Mackenzie Hughes, and Taylor Gooch.

It is hard to expect another record-setting performance this time around, but one thing is certain: players who hope to be near the lead come Sunday will need to make a ton of birdies. Final scores have been at or below -17 under par since 2015, which shouldn't change this week.

Another interesting note is that there has never been a winner of this event who hasn't played at least one other event since the Tour Championship.

You can find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. And be sure to read our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS articles and Player News/Matchup Outlook Posts to help you win big!

The Courses: Sea Island Resort (Plantation & Seaside Courses)

Par 70 - 7005 yards (Seaside) | Par 72 - 7060 yards (Plantation) | Greens: Tifeagle Bermuda | Designed By: Tom Fazio (Seaside) and Davis Love (Plantation)

St. Simon's Island is where the PGA Tour season will again come to a close. Once dawned by Golf Digest as the number one golf resort in North America, Sea Island is a premier destination for vacationers and some top tour professionals to call home.

These Tom Fazio and Davis Love designs are among the best places to play. As previously stated, the RSM Classic is played on two courses (Seaside and Plantation), however, the Seaside layout will garner significantly more attention this week as players only play one round on the Plantation side.

The Seaside course plays adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, as 13 of the 18 holes feature water hazards. As one can imagine, wind will be a big factor in finding the right quadrants of these massive green complexes. But most importantly, having a hot putter will make the most difference, as all of the top 5 players from last year's event ranked inside the top six for the week in strokes gained putting.

Recent RSM Classic Winners

  • 2023: Ludvig Aberg (-29)
  • 2022: Adam Svensson (-19)
  • 2021: Taylor Gooch (-22)
  • 2020: Robert Streb (-19)
  • 2019: Tyler Duncan (-19)

The Horse

Ludvig Aberg

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('23)

Normally, it would be hard to justify the top spot in this article focusing on a guy with only two tournament appearances, especially when it has only resulted in one quality finish. However, Ludvig Aberg is undoubtedly the quality of player that could demand such attention.

His week last season was magical, and the game he put on display in 2024 would trounce any other resume in this field. Understandably, there may be some rust to knock off as he hasn't hit a meaningful shot in two-and-a-half months, but if he blows the doors off again, no one will be surprised.

The Ponies

Adam Svensson

  • Notable Finishes:  T5 ('23), 1st ('22)

After a poor run at this event in his first three attempts, Adam Svensson has started to become a force at Sea Island. The Canadian is fourth in the field in total strokes gained across the two courses (+1.72 per round) over his last 12 rounds.

He has made his last two cuts but has struggled to get things going with the putter. The good news is he's boasting an impressive +1.68 strokes gained putting average over his last three starts at Sea Island.

Seamus Power

  • Notable Finishes: T5 ('22), T4 ('21)

After not making the trip last season, Seamus Power is back to build on the recent history at Sea Island and try to cap off an impressive Fall Series that has produced three top-15 finishes and a T23 finish this past week in Bermuda.

Power has been incredible with the flat stick and getting it in good positions off the tee, which will bode well for him at the two courses this week. If the irons catch fire, it could be a big week for the Irishman.

J.J. Spaun

  • Notable Finishes: T13 ('23), T15 ('22), 2nd ('17)

With one of the longest track records at this event, J.J. Spaun is making his 9th career start at Sea Island, and at 94th in the FedEx Cup standings, he needs a strong week to feel comfortable about his position going into 2025.

He has had a decent fall run with a T6 at the ZOZO Championship as his top finish and has made every cut aside from withdrawing at the Sanderson Farms after posting an opening round 75. Ranking third in the field in total strokes gained over the two courses (+1.8 per round) in the last 12 rounds, he should warrant some considerations this week in DFS formats.
