All 30 Major League Baseball teams have started playing Spring Training games, but that doesn't mean transactions have been paused. An astonishingly high number of free agents remain available, with many of them represented by stingy super-agent Scott Boras.
One of the top players currently on the market is starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery. The Boras client is coming off a career year in which he posted a 3.56 FIP and 4.3 fWAR. He was effective at recording outs and limiting loud contact, as evidenced by his 7.92 K/9, 2.29 BB/9, 0.86 HR/9, and 43.2 GB%.

Honorable Mentions
- Texas Rangers: Montgomery pitched for the Rangers last year, helping lead them to a World Series. The two sides haven't been linked much this offseason, but they'd surely welcome him back at the right price.
- Los Angeles Dodgers: It seems like the Dodgers' spending spree has finally come to an end, at least for now. With that said, can we ever truly rule them out?
- San Francisco Giants: The Giants have lost out on several free-agent targets this season and presumably feel their pursuit of starting pitching replenishments fell short. With that said, they could still land someone like Montgomery or Blake Snell.

Los Angeles Angels
The Angels failed to bring back Shohei Ohtani this offseason, but as long as Mike Trout remains under contract, they're going to have to act like a competitive team.
Snell has always felt like a reasonable target for the Halos, but his contractual demands after winning the National League Cy Young award might be out of Los Angeles' price range. A slightly cheaper alternative is Montgomery, who has been consistent over the past couple of years and is already familiar with the American League West.

New York Yankees
The Yankees are always going to keep their foot on the gas pedal, even in a very challenging AL East division. Just months after trading for Juan Soto, they could flex their muscle again by inking Montgomery.
There's a clear connection here. The Yankees drafted Montgomery back in 2014, and he spent more than five years donning pinstripes at the big-league level. He struggled to stay healthy at times in New York but always kept his FIP below 4.22.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have been very timid when it comes to spending money this offseason, but perhaps they're saving up for one major splash in the final days of February?
Boston is currently the betting favorite to sign Montgomery at +100 odds. There's also a clear connection here as the Red Sox were one of the first teams to meet with him after the 2023 postseason. Furthermore, Montgomery's wife is studying to become a doctor in Boston, so the geographical fit makes perfect sense.

New York Mets
Steve Cohen's aggressive style of spending has been toned down following a massively disappointing 2023 campaign, but he's still very capable of handing out big contracts.
New York has clear holes in its current rotation, so adding Montgomery would give the Mets a stable starting pitcher. Presumably, both sides would be in favor of a five- or six-year deal, keeping the southpaw in Queens as the organization looks to compete once again.
