Week 6 Fantasy Football Quarterback Outlooks
Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has been one of the NFL's most efficient passers through the first five weeks of the season. The veteran has completed 73% of his passes (third-best in the NFL) while ranking seventh in both passing yards and touchdowns. After a breakout 2024 campaign in Minnesota, where he threw for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns, some questioned whether Darnold could replicate that success in Seattle. So far, he's answered emphatically.
With Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerging as a true No. 1 receiver, Darnold is producing like a top-10 fantasy quarterback. The Seahawks face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6, who lead the NFL in interceptions, making Darnold a slightly risky start. Still, he remains a strong high-end QB2 with weekly upside in fantasy leagues moving forward.
Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones (knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Jones has been battling a PCL sprain that he aggravated in their Week 3 win over Arizona. The injury hasn't affected Jones' performance too much as he has played very well in place of Brock Purdy (toe). In his three starts, Jones is completing 66.7% of his passes and averaging 302 passing yards and two touchdowns per game.
And he showed tremendous fight while clearly playing hurt in their upset win over the Rams in primetime. While the 49ers will be without most of their pass-catching core again, Jones was able to make it work, mostly through Kendrick Bourne and Christian McCaffrey. Assuming Jones is good to go, he will rank as a high-end fantasy QB2 for a potential shootout against Tampa Bay in Week 6.
Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (hip, thumb) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice session. Tagovailoa apparently suffered a hip and left thumb injury during last Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. The 27-year-old didn't show any signs of being injured when he threw for 256 yards with three touchdowns.
He's finally starting to turn a page with five touchdowns and zero interceptions over his last two games. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too worried about Tagovailoa for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. It's the beginning of the week, and the Dolphins are going to be careful, especially with Tagovailoa's injury history. At the moment, fantasy managers should fully expect Tagovailoa out there for Week 6.
Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had his worst rushing game of the season against Denver on Sunday, being held to just two attempts for three yards on the ground. However, Hurts is facing a Giants defense on Thursday night that allowed Jayden Daniels to run for 68 yards on them a few weeks back, so the Philly QB should be back to his scrambling ways in Week 6.
He had another high-volume passing day against the Broncos, tallying a season-high 280 yards while posting two touchdowns. He has now thrown for seven scores over his last three outings. Expect a multi-pronged attack by Hurts against a poor New York defense. He should be considered a top-tier QB1, even on a short week.
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) did not take part in the first practice of the week on Wednesday, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Purdy suffered a turf-toe injury in the season opener and missed Weeks 2 and 3 before returning in Week 4, only to aggravate his toe.
The 25-year-old missed his third game of the year in last Thursday's surprising upset win over the Los Angeles Rams. Purdy is progressing from his toe injury, but he remains week-to-week and could certainly miss his fourth game of the year in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is definitely going to need to return to practice in the next two days to even have a shot at playing on Sunday. Mac Jones (knee) has been banged up himself early this year, but he should be able to make a fourth start against Tampa if Purdy is ruled out later this week.
Geno Smith, Las Vegas Raiders
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says he would classify the Las Vegas Raiders as "mildly concerned" about quarterback Geno Smith's rough start to the season. Fowler adds that there's "no sentiment that Smith is a broken quarterback." Smith is not expected to be benched in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans. Scouts that Fowler has talked with think Smith has "been too late" with the ball and is relying on his arm talent to force footballs into tight windows. It hasn't been pretty for the veteran QB through five games, as he's thrown six touchdowns and a league-leading nine interceptions.
Smith and head coach Pete Carroll have enough equity from their days in Seattle that Carroll "could stick with him a little longer as a result." With that said, real questions are going to arise about Smith's job status if he cannot get the job done on Sunday against the one-win Titans.
Joe Flacco, Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, whom the team acquired in a trade from the division-rival Cleveland Browns this week, will make his debut and start on Sunday at the Green Bay Packers in Week 6, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Bengals are benching Jake Browning after he tossed three more interceptions in the Week 5 loss to the Detroit Lions. Cincy plans to lean heavily on Flacco to try and keep their playoff hopes alive, with Joe Burrow (toe) potentially out for the rest of the season.
Flacco will once again be in play as a low-end QB2 streamer in superflex fantasy leagues, and he should have more upside now that he'll be throwing to receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. However, the 40-year-old might not end up being much of an upgrade over Browning after he threw two touchdowns and six picks in four starts with Cleveland before being benched by rookie Dillon Gabriel.
