Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 3:
Jauan Jennings, WR, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings (ankle) injured his ankle in the Week 2 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday and will be evaluated day-to-day through this week, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic.
It's been one thing after another for Jennings health-wise since the offseason workouts, when he suffered a calf injury. The 28-year-old missed most of training camp and all of the preseason after aggravating his calf issue before injuring his shoulder in the season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks.
The good news is that he looked healthy and operated as the WR1 on Sunday against the Saints, catching five of 10 targets for 89 yards and his first touchdown of 2025. Jennings will at least be in play as a WR4/flex if he's active in Week 3 against the division-rival Cardinals, but if he's out or limited, Ricky Pearsall would be the top target for quarterback Mac Jones.
Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers rookie first-round wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan continued to operate as the Panthers' WR1 and quarterback Bryce Young's favorite target in Week 2 in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Through the first two games, McMillan has seen a consistent workload with nine and 10 targets, respectively.
In Week 2, he caught six passes for 100 yards, including a 40-yard reception, but failed to find the end zone. In comparison to Week 1, Young had more time for longer downfield plays to develop, putting together a great second half. Young completed 35 of 55 passes for a career-high 328 yards and three touchdowns. Although McMillan has yet to score, he has shown he can be trusted in both the quick passing game and on deep shots, and he should continue to thrive in all fantasy formats.
Things won't get easier for McMillan and the Panthers in Week 3, as they take on the Atlanta Falcons, who just held arguably the best wide receiver in football, Justin Jefferson, to three catches for 81 yards. McMillan should continue to be deployed as a WR2 option with serious upside due to his high-volume target share. Let's hope that Young can build on his Week 2 performance, which would bode well for McMillan's outlook moving forward.
Jaylen Warren, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke highly of running back Jaylen Warren, saying that "We might have to keep giving (Warren) him more opportunities in the pass game, because every time he touches it, something good happens."
Warren has always been a solid fantasy asset in the passing game in his career, with 133 receptions in four NFL seasons; however, last Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, he was very productive through the air, hauling in all four of his targets for 86 yards, for a total of 134 all-purpose yards on 18 touches (14 on the ground and four through the air).
This is an excellent sign for Warren fantasy owners, as rookie third round pick, Kaleb Johnson, does not appear to be getting any opportunities of the backfield. His only other competition for opportunities is Kenneth Gainwell, who went from a 54% snap share in Week 1 to a 42% snap share in Week 2. Warren should be considered a solid RB2 heading into Week 3 against the New England Patriots.
Ricky Pearsall, WR, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall caught four passes for 56 receiving yards in the team's 26-21 win over the Saints on Sunday. His Week 2 yardage was just shy of half his total from Week 1, but he was readily involved in the passing attack, with his six targets ranking third on the team.
Even with Mac Jones standing in for Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) for the next few weeks, Pearsall will still be a solid fantasy producer. Fellow wideout Jauan Jennings (ankle) is nursing an ankle injury sustained against the Saints and is considered day-to-day.
If the Jauan Jennings is ruled out or continues to be limited in Week 3, the second-year pro out of Florida would operate as Mac Jones' top target against the Arizona Cardinals.
DK Metcalf, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf found the end zone in Week 2 against his former team, the Seattle Seahawks, but was otherwise quiet, finishing with three receptions for 20 yards. While Metcalf leads Pittsburgh in targets, he currently ranks second in both receptions and receiving yards. It's clear he is the team's top wideout, but his 6.5 opportunities per game fall short of true WR1 usage.
The silver lining is that the Steelers' defensive struggles are forcing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to pass on over 63% of plays. With so much turnover on offense this season, it may just take time for Metcalf and the rest of the unit to fully click, but the upside is tangible.
The 27-year-old is a strong buy-low candidate in fantasy football and should be in starting lineups this week against the New England Patriots, who have surrendered the second-most fantasy points to receivers through two games.
