Week 6 Running Back (RB) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

Dion Lewis has played at an incredibly high level but he still has plenty of people doubting him as a New England back. I think it’s time to move past that. This offense is playing extremely well and the Patriots have repeatedly shown a commitment to Lewis when the game is close. He has rewarded that commitment with big play after big play. He may be questionable this week, but it looks like he will play without limitations. I have him at RB6 and I’ve shed any worry I may have had about Lewis and his situation!

Will things be different for Lamar Miller following a coaching change and the bye week? I am cautiously optimistic and I have him four spots ahead of his consensus rank at RB14. It’s not a guarantee but the expectation is that Miller will see more action now. I certainly think he will. Miller has had just 18 touches for 101 yards the past two games combined. Those are numbers he is capable of putting up in a single game. Look for new HC Dan Campbell to prove things will be different by putting Miller to use.

It looks like LeSean McCoy will play this week and I have him as a mid to low-end RB2 at RB20. There is definitely some concern about what his workload will be and how he can handle returning against a tough Bengals defense that has only allowed one RB rushing touchdown this season. On the other hand if Tyrod Taylor is limited or out expect the Bills to rely more on McCoy. I think he gets enough touches to be startable, but I don’t have much confidence that he can put up big numbers.

The loss of Jamaal Charles is huge for the Chiefs but it presents a new opportunity for fantasy owners to grab a much-needed starting RB. The problem is it’s not clear if there will be a fantasy-relevant back here or whether it will be an ugly RBBC. The expectation is that Charcandrick West gets the first crack at the job and he has a consensus rank of RB20. Personally, I think that’s way too high given the uncertainty and the matchup against the Vikings. I have West at RB28 and I’m playing more of a wait and see game. For starters, I think it’s very very possible that Knile Davis has already supplanted West as the top back by the end of this game. Second, following destruction at the hands of Carlos Hyde, the Vikings have looked very good against the run. Outside of letting Ronnie Hillman slip through the cracks for a 72 yard touchdown run, the Vikings have held running backs to just a 3.0 YPC on 60 other rushing attempts over the last three games.

Speaking of Hillman, the Broncos RB situation is not very pretty at the moment. I have both he and CJ Anderson outside my top 30 with a slight preference for Hillman. I think you’d have to be desperate for a home run play to start either. The Browns are a very nice matchup but I just have no confidence in which one will end up leading the team in carries.
